'Studio 54'—a legendary venue and one of the most iconic symbols of the ‘70s. This club literally kicked off the club scene as we know it. 'Studio 54’ wasn't just a popular nightclub; for those lucky enough to get in, it was a world where absolutely anything was possible. A vibrant, colorful, alluring world—it had its own unique atmosphere that couldn’t be found anywhere else. No wonder everyone flocked there—from celebrities to ordinary people.

And against the backdrop of all this decadent permissiveness, the story unfolds of a young man named Shane O’Shea, whose own life in the suburbs of New York is so dreary and hopeless that it makes you want to cry. His biggest dream is to get into the most popular club, “Studio 54,” and dance with Olivia Newton-John. A miracle happens—Steve Rubell himself (the founder of “Studio 54”) lets him into the club, and he plunges into this forbidden nightlife. Ahead of him lie success, meeting celebrities, working at the club, new friends… but also despair, arguments, hatred, humiliation, and loss…

Mark Christopher has directed an intriguing drama about a nightclub and its patrons, about youth and its charms, mistakes, and the lessons learned from them. And if he hadn’t chosen such an iconic venue—with all its trappings—as the backdrop, the film would most likely have paled in comparison to other movies with similar themes. The atmosphere of “Studio 54” is recreated in great detail and with great accuracy—the vibrant sets, disco music, costumes, and even hairstyles instantly transport the viewer back to the wild ’70s. But in any case, it remains merely a backdrop for the main story.

The cast was very well chosen. There are plenty of familiar names, all with solid track records. Ryan Phillippe is a good actor, though not everyone takes him seriously as a professional because of his good looks. But this film (and later *Cruel Intentions*, released a year later) proved his acting abilities. His character, Shane, feels relatable and understandable, because the mistakes he made are ones any of us could make. Mike Myers, who played Steve Rubell, also gave a solid performance on screen. His character inspired nothing but contempt and disgust, but it couldn’t have been any other way. A man who ran the dirtiest business in New York couldn’t be charming or attractive, and playing such a role also requires skill. Breckin Meyer and Salma Hayek are decent, but nothing more. The subplot involving the “quasi-love triangle” was completely unnecessary. I liked Neve Campbell’s performance, but unfortunately, she was given very little screen time.

There are plenty of stories on this theme, and the vast majority of them focus on women. On the one hand, that’s not surprising, since this film is yet another take on “Cinderella” set in the modern world. On the other hand, it was quite interesting to see this story told specifically from the male protagonist’s (rather than the female protagonist’s) perspective. The plot unfolds at a brisk pace, but the action isn’t as dynamic as it could be. It’s worth acknowledging that the film dragged in places, and some moments were completely uninteresting. In my opinion, they could have made it edgier and more realistic.

The main message of the film, in my opinion, was to convey to young people that all the bright colors of club life and the glittering lights of the big city are actually just superficial glitz, behind which lie filth, lies, betrayals, and other “charms” of this life. Whether all those fake smiles and feigned happiness are necessary—that’s for everyone to decide for themselves. Meanwhile, life goes on in full swing, and the party continues. Not a bad drama—I liked it.
