The film is shot in a very strange music video style. It’s yet another typical story about a gangster who has retired and doesn’t want to go back into the business. But it’s not shot in a typical way—in fact, it’s quite unusual. The film is shot like a music video—a regular hour-and-a-half-long music video—with a couple of flashbacks and a couple of surreal episodes. The director borrowed from everyone and added his own skill at directing music videos. The modest English actors—with the exception of the Oscar-winning Kingsley—nevertheless work very hard to portray gangsters carrying out a crazy operation.

The film is called “Sexy Beast” – that, too, is a mystery. If it refers to the main character, then he’s already an aging “sexy beast.” Throughout the film, you’re treated to stunning visuals – the meaning of what’s happening is slightly muddled, and the scenes don’t follow one another in a logical sequence. At times, the main character is visited by—and this is certainly another stroke of genius by the director—that very same surreal black rabbit, seemingly straight out of either Lynch’s films or the cult classic *Donnie Darko*.

The film’s utterly baffling ending, however, does provide a detailed answer to the question of exactly where Ben Kingsley’s character went when he didn’t fly off to the airport. Although everyone already knew the answer. And the pool—perhaps it, too, is a pool from the depths of the protagonist’s subconscious.

There are three elements in the film that strongly evoke a sense of the unreality of what’s happening: the black rabbit, the enormous rock falling into the pool, and Ben Kingsley in a coffin. It is precisely because of these three elements that the film can be classified not only as a British comedy and a gangster story, but also as a film not for everyone. And, as we all know, we’re only interested in films that aren’t for everyone.
