The legendary story comes to life on big screens like never before. An incredible journey into the world of amazing creatures and magic, where even a wooden doll can become a real person, if it wishes it with a pure heart.

Review 4K Movie

Let the tale of the adventures of a revived wooden doll in the vastness of our homeland known under the name "The Golden Key, or The Adventures of Pinocchio" by Alexei Tolstoy, it is no secret to anyone that this is essentially a Soviet fanfiction of the Italian fairy tale "The Adventures of Pinocchio" by Carlo Collodi. The history of the wooden doll ”. Tolstoy claimed that he wanted to tell the reader his own version of the story, since the original seemed to him too gloomy and moralizing, and therefore brought more fun and adventurism into the adventures of Buratino. Western cinema also often filmed its Pinocchio in a rather funny and positive way, but it was forgotten for a long time after the colossal artistic failure of Roberto Benigni in 2002. Only Matteo Garrone could correct the situation - and if you saw how he brought the Fairy Tale to life on the screen fairy tales "by Giambattista Basile, then questions like" whether to lead your child to the new Pinocchio "will disappear by themselves.

With his characteristic uncompromising realism, which finally destroyed the romantic halo around the "mafia" cinema ("Gomorrah"), Garrone continues to melt eerie fairytale conventions into a more dramatic and reliable plane, which is why magical stories acquire a new and no less eerie sound, while retaining this magical aura. This "Pinocchio" can easily disappoint the viewer eager to contemplate a magnificent extravaganza on the screen - although the plot of Garrone's book follows strictly , a thoughtful and very detailed parable about finding a soul through going through serious trials and overcoming difficulties. With the meticulousness of the festival drama, Garrone wants to convey to the public the feeling of every stage of life lived by the heroes - here is a dirty closet breathing poverty, hunger and want, here is the frightening world of animated dolls of the bearded man Manjafuoko, here is a cunning scam of the Fox and Cat who have gotten into the trust, and here is a fateful meeting with the Blue Fairy in various age guises, in whose face both age-old wisdom and existential sadness shine through. It is impossible not to notice the dark messages hidden between the lines from which the director removes the veil, such as, for example, the episode where a decrepit old man with rotten teeth takes children to the promised Land of Entertainment, in fact, taking the guys to nowhere, when the slightest awareness of the metaphorical nature of what is happening freezes heart.

And who would have thought that Benigni, who almost ditched his career, would play so brilliantly the father of Pinocchio, the poor man Geppetto, who was the real personification of parental sacrifice. In his hasty speech, touching fussiness and eyes full of sadness, anxiety and adoration, one can see a man who cannot offer his child anything but an infinitely loving heart and is ready to sell the last shirt, just to give the child a chance for a brighter future - the scene in the finale is incomparable, where Geppetto, without a word, neatly seals the cracks that have formed on Pinocchio's face as a result of his wanderings and hardships. So if you decide to go on a macabre journey through the grotesquely frightening, but still bewitching and magical Italy of Matteo Garrone, then do not take your children with you and do not pay much attention to some minus of the film - a long familiar and therefore predictable story from which the director tried to make a smart and serious drama about overcoming imperfection on the way to becoming a living and feeling person.
