In 1960s America, when racial prejudice was still strong, a white small-town sheriff is forced to join forces with a dark-skinned Philadelphia detective to investigate a brutal murder.

Their mutual racial animosity is reinforced by the absolute dissimilarity of their characters and their different methods of investigation. Thus, the crime investigation turns into a personal showdown between tough cops. But in order to get on the trail of a mysterious killer, they must learn to work together.

It's a classic detective, not just because it won five Oscars, but because of the way the story is presented and the clever direction. Watching it now, you understand where modern detectives get their roots from. There's the style, the already mentioned directing, and the camerawork makes you stay focused on what's happening on the screen, constantly changing frame by frame, and yet... probably even a chip is the soundtrack. It makes the whole movie feel completely 60's and the value of the picture increases even more after such music.

And yet I will add one more thing. The film is also revealing in that even the murder investigation is not the main thing, but rather the survival of a big city black detective in a small town called 'Sparta', where racism is strong and this hatred of the locals constantly interferes with the investigation. Even at the local police station he was mistaken for a criminal until he showed his badge.

So, the picture is also revealing in terms of the attitudes of the times.
