A noir classic, considered perhaps one of the most important films of this genre, Billy Wilder director of the film proves once again that he is one of the best directors in the history of cinema and one of the most versatile, who is able to shoot masterpieces in absolutely any genre.

From the very beginning the viewer finds out the final result of the choice made by the main hero, insurance agent Walter Neff for the sake of dubious love to a girl and considerable sum of money, he confesses in what he has done to his friend recording his confession on a tape recorder, and meanwhile the spectator becomes an involuntary witness, and here begins the story, where the viewer knows the outcome, thus having a choice or desire to change something in his decision to do the right thing.

I would advise to watch this film first of all for all potential murderers who are planning to get away with it, so they can change their decision and feel what will be waiting for them after what they have done, I have never felt so clear, even in the films of the great Hitchcock, the pressure a man feels knowing what he has done, when he is tormented by his conscience and at the same time being dripped under him, when he realizes that what he has done has not brought any expected dividends, but is nothing but a pack of lies. It's hard to think of anything more psychologically horrible, and a moment separates a man from such a decision, because Walter Neff, had a chance to come to his senses, he was even offered a promising position, but the glitter of temptation shone too brightly, worth crossing the line, as the glitter turns into a growing black spot. Alfred Hitchcock would later relish the theme of the perfect crime, but both his films and Double Indemnity demonstrate the fact that there is no such thing as a perfect crime.

The actors are all very good, in Billy Wilder's films the actors always play very precisely and naturally, but especially Barbara Stanwyck - the very incarnation of deceit and cunning, I remember her from Howard Hawks' film With a Light, where she played a slightly bitchy gangster's girlfriend seducing a company of scientists, But there at heart she was a light lady in need of love, albeit with bad manners and a screwed up character, here her character is fundamentally different, she just oozes gloomy evil, and you do not believe a word she says, a very strong role.

It was nominated for an Oscar in seven categories, including Best Picture, but won in none. The American Film Institute (AFI) included the movie in their list of the 100 most outstanding American films in history and it was ranked #29 in 2007. And also AFI included the movie in the list of 100 greatest thrillers, 100 greatest love films, and Barbara Stanwyck's heroine was given the honor of being on the 8th place in the list of the most cult villains.

By the way, Billy Wilder himself considered this his best film in his filmography.
