1950s. A small town in Texas. Dwayne Jackson and Sonny Crawford are the stars of the local high school soccer team. Dwayne is aggressive and Sonny is quiet and sensitive. They are best friends.

A mentally retarded boy, Billy, lives in the town and is being brutally bullied and teased by the regulars at the local movie theater. Sonny steps in for Billy and becomes his protector. And then becomes the friend and lover of Ruth Popper, the lonely wife of the high school basketball coach. Sonny and Dwayne go to Mexico for a while, where they have a wild party, and on their return they get some sad news.

Review 4K Movie

When the film appeared on the cinema screens, it left people somewhat bewildered - in the era of a riot of screen colors, they saw a black-and-white picture shot in a restrained, stingy manner. On the screen was the truth of life in a European way never before seen in American film production, and yet in such an unusual setting as the Southwest of America, with its constant dust storms and tumbleweeds, is no doubt.

Sonny and his girlfriend made love incessantly in the front seat of the truck. Her bra dangled on the rearview mirror, and her nipples, constantly flashed in the frame, became as mundane a sketch of nature as the landscape behind the car window. In another episode, the kids analyzed without a shadow of embarrassment the advantages of sex with a "chick" compared to a prostitute. And in a scene of a "golden youth" pool party, a frontal "nude" display of pubic hair is shown. And yet "The Last Picture Show" offers more than just "clubbing." Everything in this film acts, looks and sounds life-like.

Sonny, superbly played by Tim Bottoms, is a confused underdog, at a crossroads between the world of adolescence and adulthood. Sybil Sheppard, as Bogdanovich intended, is capable only of "screwing up" teenagers, absorbed exclusively in herself, a mindless temptress. And the other characters are conveyed in incredible relief. Helen Berstin, as the melancholy, tired of life mother, trapped in an unsuccessful marriage, exchanging happiness for prosperity, watching the passing life. Cloris Leachman, who won an Oscar for the role, played the lonely coach's wife, "broken" to the point where she descends into an affair with Sonny. And of course, Ben Johnson, who also won an Oscar for his role in this film, brought the moral authority of "old" Hollywood to the screen, having spent all his years working side by side with John Ford. The only acting failure is young Jeff Bridges, playing Dwayne, too smarmy to convince the viewer that he is a crude redneck.

When the town's only movie theater closes, one of the characters utters: "Nobody wants to go to the movies anymore. Outside it's baseball, at home it's TV." And Sonny and Duane make it to the last movie. It was 1948's Red River, by Howard Hawks, and the boys saw John Wayne and Montgomery Cliff driving cattle to Missouri. The viewer was inevitably "stuck" in his mind by the last shots of the picture: the howling wind over the deserted main street of the town, the shriveled leaves and newspaper scraps in the wind. This could only be compared to Antonioni's films in terms of conveying a sense of alienation and irreplaceable loss.
