The scientist Gustav Niemann admires the work of his colleague Victor Frankenstein and promises his cellmate, the hunchbacked Daniel, a new healthy body if they manage to leave the prison and find Frankenstein's manuscripts. Seizing the opportunity, they escape and immediately kill a passing Lumpini, who is driving around with his mobile "Room of Horrors". Blinded by a thirst for revenge, Niemann heads to the town where he was once sentenced to prison to not only exact revenge, but also to bring back to life the Werewolf Man and Frankenstein's monster buried beneath the ruins of the laboratory....

This is the first film from Universal Studios featuring three monsters: Dracula, the Wolf Man, and Frankenstein. Rumor has it that a mummy was also supposed to be included (it's hard to imagine how they would have squeezed her in), but there wasn't enough money for the old lady. And the most surprising thing is that Dracula does not interact with Frankenstein and the Wolf Man here. The bloodsucker has his own storyline.
The main character is a certain Dr. Niemann, who was thrown into jail for various experiments. The man admires Baron Frankenstein's experiments. During a thunderstorm, lightning strikes Niemann's cell, freeing him and his assistant Daniel (a reference to Frankenstein's hunchbacked assistant from the original James Whale film).

Of course, this is a hodgepodge, but it's very funny and quite intriguing. The creators brought back Boris Karloff, who refused to dress up as Frankenstein's monster, but happily played the psychopath Niemann. As always, Karloff delivers a colorful character. He plays it excellently. John Carradine, on the other hand, looked a little strange in the role of Dracula.
I can't ignore Lon Chaney Jr., whose shaggy hero is pursued by a local gypsy girl (actress Elena Verdujo), who at one time sympathizes with the hunchback Daniel. In my subjective opinion, they could have done without the romantic entanglements. After all, the hunchback is tied to Niemann, and the Wolf Man is eternally cursed. If we're making a hodgepodge, let it be a rich one, such seems to be the logic.

It's a shame about Frankenstein's monster, who, to be honest, only appears for about five minutes (it would have been better to increase his screen time, yes, instead of the gypsy). I didn't even understand who was hiding behind the makeup, I had to open the cast and discovered American actor Glenn Strange. There is information that Boris encouraged the actor on set, sharing his experience (how to growl, ha-ha-ha).

I weighed the pros and cons for a long time, and the pros outweighed the cons, so the review is positive after all. Director Kenton once again (after The Ghost of Frankenstein) managed to please.
