In times immemorial, men sacrificed girls from their tribe to leopards. This is how cat people were born. Outwardly they do not differ from ordinary people, but from time to time they turn into animals and are prone to violence.

A brother and sister, whose parents died a strange death, meet in New Orleans after a long separation. The girl gets a job at the zoo and learns that a killer leopard has appeared in town.

A remake of the 1942 mystery film of the same name, with which it has almost nothing in common except the main idea and the key scene in the swimming pool. What in the '40s film was presented only in chaste hints is presented here quite frankly, in the spirit of the times. Once upon a time a tribe sacrificed their children to leopards, and from this tribe evolved a race of werewolf-men who, after having sex with ordinary humans, could turn into black leopards (panthers). The only way to get back to human form was to kill someone. They could have sex without turning into animals only with their blood relatives, the same people-cats. It's a totally transparent allegory that we don't even need to dwell on.

The film begins with the meeting of a brother and sister, representatives of this endangered species, who lived apart after the death of their parents and finally found each other. The older brother Paul has long lived in an endless cycle of sex, transformation and murder, eating prostitutes and other trash that abounds in New Orleans. He has long wanted to stop this cycle, but he cannot stop, and so his younger sister Irena is a godsend. But Irena is still young, virginal and naive, and the suggestion of incest terrifies her. One day her brother, in the guise of a panther, is caught and taken to a zoo. There, guided by instinct, her sister arrives and stands by his cage all day, unaware, but somehow knowing that it is him. There she was spotted by the young and handsome curator of the zoo, Oliver, who immediately offered her a job with him. Oliver already has a friend Alice, who at first tries to make friends with Irena, but then she becomes bitterly jealous of her, which only a girl like "her boyfriend" can feel to a mysterious and exotic rival, who easily turns heads with men, pretending to be so naive and innocent...

Normal people in the film are played by 100% Americans, and werewolves are exotic Europeans: a still young Malcolm McDowell and a very young Nastassja Kinski.

As utterly absurd as the retelling may seem, the movie looks quite organic on the screen, thanks to the excellent atmosphere and the acting. I liked the picture, and I re-watched the most beloved parts, like Nastasia's nighttime rabbit hunt in the infrared image, several times. The film is very octogenarian, which, as they say for whom but I love this style: the mysterious and mystical atmosphere of old prehistoric New Orleans; the real black panthers (fortunately for the artistic merits of the picture, there were no computer graphics then); lots of erotica and naked, and in some moments openly naked Nastassja Kinsky; beautiful synth music by Giorgio Moroder.
