Teenager Mike witnesses mysterious events at the town's Morningside Cemetery. A grim undertaker - a two-meter tall Tall Man - steals fresh corpses straight from the graves and does something terrible with them in the depths of the funeral home. Mike's parents are dead, Jody's older brother doesn't believe him - it's hard to take the boy's stories about vicious zombie midgets and flying killer spheres seriously. But soon Jody and his ice cream man friend Reggie will have to see just how dangerous the Tall Man and his creatures are.

The first video parlors in perestroika Russia and this film. To say that such movies made a vivid impression on a ten-year-old child is to say nothing. Some people watched action movies with undestroyable oriental actors. And I loved and love horror movies. The atmosphere of such movies makes you dream more often. To think. To think mentally. I don't really like slashers. They don't have that atmosphere. Just a butcher shop on a chopping day. But the cocktail of mysticism, which gives the film its atmosphere of mystery, and the drive of all those pursuits, confrontations, etc. - it's exhilarating.

Of course, I don't perceive Phantasm now as I did when I was a kid. And here the increased quality of staging and special effects in modern horror films is most likely to blame. But there's no such atmosphere in the new movie.

This is the '80s! People are more naive and simpler. There's not that cynicism ubiquitous now. Men save the 'princesses' and the princesses don't mind getting naked without turning the film into a porno. And they don't try to take the place of men. It's the right time. And I'm drawn to it.

Of course you have to make allowances for a completely small budget by today's standards. And now the attack by little 'zombies' looks like an inexpensive interpretation from Youtube. But still, the film is catchy. It's unusual. It's ideological. It's like the first thing made by someone still brimming with the desire to create and brimming with ideas. It's not an attempt to make money on another blockbuster. It's just the idea of showing, 'Look what I've come up with.

And indeed. Some of the ideas are very original. And the film is unpredictable. And that's important. You don't know what the script is hiding from you. What's behind that door... Maybe it just eats them... Primitive? I agree. No, it turns out to be much more interesting and deeper than that.

Yes, the film doesn't reveal its whole world and doesn't answer the questions 'Why? Why? From where?' And that's a bit disappointing, but at the same time it leaves you free to figure it all out for yourself.

The only thing I didn't understand was the ending. The end of the movie feels like it's from different versions. And this 'gluing' is so sudden and abrupt. It puts you in a state of stupor. As if the authors wanted to drive to something of their own, to something different, at the end. And not what the film was leading them to. Mystery.

And don't think the story is just fiction. It's a received signal. In this case, the director of the film took it and portrayed it in his story the way he saw it.
