Story Movie

On November 14, 1974, the police station received a call: six people had been shot dead in their beds at the De Faux family home. Ronald De Foe confessed to killing his parents and brothers, explaining that certain voices told him to commit the murders.

A year later, George and Katie Lutz and their three children move into the house, believing their cherished dream has come true. What they don't know yet is that their happiness is threatened by a terrible demonic force.

Review 4K Movie

We all crave originality in stories, we are all sophisticated and demanding movie buffs, wrinkling our noses at the sight of stampedes: “Fi!” And if we are shown a haunted house, we instantly remember a dozen similar plots, a black-haired dead girl - a dozen more, and if it comes to the frightening past of the building, we are ready to bet on all ten fingers that the heroine will definitely first turn to the priest-exorcist, and then go to the local library, where she will come across the opus: “A hundred years ago here were brutally murdered and buried in the basement ...”. And there is no need to talk about the fact that small children, who are supposedly more sensitive to everything unreal, and who are closer in age to minor ghosts, will definitely start a frenship with an “imaginary friend”. That's why they are stamps.

Often, however, even in a stamped horror movie, it's often not what we're shown, but how it's done that's most important. Tired of both hands to rake around shoddy, annoying thrash, sometimes you can stumble upon a picture with an all-too-familiar plot, but presented in a rare glorious form. It's like a vulgar Olivier salad served in the best table service with silverware and a rose on the tray. It seems to taste more refined and more pleasant to eat. Such is “The Amityville Horror”, which has a lot of recognizable episodes, but the good old rags to riches in this movie are presented to the viewer so spectacularly, dynamically and beautifully that recognizability falls by the wayside, giving way to interest in visual quality and style of presentation. Add to this the excellent acting of Ryan Reynolds, impressive sets, music, makeup and special effects, and you get a good movie that may not shock, but is quite pleasing to the eye and ear. The basement, images of tortured victims, gaining momentum madness of the main character ...

Many people caught the plot similarities with “The Shining” - perhaps, but very shallow. And in terms of artistic realization and, in fact, the techniques of “intimidation of the viewer”, “Amityville” has taken a step forward, which is not surprising, given the progress made in this area over the past decade. My hands are itching to write about the associations I had while watching it (what and where Andrew Douglas borrowed from), but I won't - I'll just say that he put together exactly what was needed. Loved the episode with the priest coming in. I remember saying at the time: “Well done, brave man!”, and two minutes later my husband added: “Not very brave,” but he noted with pleasure one detail, which I also from time to time to my liking: after learning about the devilishness, no one exclaimed: “It can't be!”, everyone sighed and accepted the truth as it is. And as for the final episode with the basement, in which George was very beautifully doused with a fountain of blood, Sasha and I shouted with one voice: “Salt and burn!”.

Bottom line: “Amityville” sins with plot predictability, but its audio and visuals are so competent and professional, and the images of the house and George are so strong and interesting that it's a pleasure to watch. Once upon a time, I dismissed “Amityville” with capricious disdain: “Another pseudo-horror movie about a haunted house!”, and watched it only yesterday. I was wrong, the movie is not bad at all.
