Moviegoers have their own hell - you've probably heard of it. He is not in the underworld, he is on Earth, in the script rooms, in the offices of producers, in the empty actors' dressing rooms. It's called production hell. It's when the filming of a movie is stretched out over many years (sometimes dozens) for various reasons. 'The Exorcism' is a busy example of a movie about production hell filmed.... in production hell. I love that kind of recursion. Not only that, the movie is about a remake of a movie about the exorcism of the devil, in which the script is about the exorcism of the devil, and the characters have to actually exorcise the devil. Ahh, it's not a movie, it's a fractal!

What is confused is Russell Crowe's character - an actor playing in a bad movie (at the time he is played by Russell Crowe playing in a mediocre movie!) Although the characters don't say out loud that they are making a remake of 'The Exorcist', it's easy to guess - by the subject matter, by the tilted head of the hat-wearing hero in the dim light of a street lamp, by the sets and the scene with the possessed girl. And the demons that haunt the hero are quite real - guilt before his dead wife, before his neglected daughter, before his colleagues in the movie shop, whom he lets down with every take. And also - the insistent whisper of the 'green snake' - come back to me, give yourself to me, forget everything. And a bad director (not a real one, but a movie director) adds oil to the movie fire, nourishing its wounds, reminding the hero not only of alcohol and drugs, but also of teenage psychotrauma, for which we are responsible for dull flashbacks.

I marveled at this endless reflection of reality's self-repetition. For that, I'm willing to forgive 'The Exorcism' the trampling, the parasitizing of the great original 'The Exorcist' (and the not at all great 'The Vatican Exorcism'), and the slackness of the third act. I just know that production hell - exists. And the movie was there. Let's sympathize with it and forgive it, as we forgive our enemies....
