This is the 21st century. Science is able to explain almost all phenomena, which a few centuries ago were called mysteries of nature and fell into the power of religion. It was religion that was the main ideology on the way to explaining those phenomena that mankind was unable to understand. The Bible even now widely promotes the idea of the existence of a Higher Power, which in its own way directs the life of the earth, its fate and destiny.

Now few people take these things seriously: someone does not understand and denies, someone understands, but does not accept, and someone, in general, is very negative and considers religious ideas complete nonsense. Nowadays every opinion has a right to exist and should be taken into account. But no matter who you are in your religion, no matter what life principles do not adhere to - materialistic, ideological or atheistic, you should accept the phenomenon of exorcism as really existed and left a bright trace in world history.

In fact, to tell the truth, some church institutions to this day actively carry out rites of exorcism and make decent money on it....

So, what is exorcism?

To exorcize means not so much to cast out, but rather to bring a spirit or demon to swear an oath or call upon Higher Powers to force the creature to act against its wishes.
We find the first mention of exorcism as far back as the Gospels. Jesus Christ, during his earthly life, repeatedly cast out demons trembling before him from people possessed by these infernal entities.

From a spiritualistic point of view, the exorcism of demons is a duel between the devil and the exorcist for the soul of the victim. There is no asylum involved. The priest and his assistant must be relatively sinless during the ritual, for the devil can throw their sins in their faces and criticize them harshly. The exorcist must be firm in the belief that the power of Christ is superior, or he is doomed to defeat.

Possession

Evidence of possession is the victim's ability to levitate, to show inhuman strength, to renounce religious words and objects, and to speak in foreign languages. The last feature was the strongest evidence for the Catholic Church. It allowed one to appeal to the bishop to authorize exorcism. The priests themselves cast out demons with the help of junior clerics of the healer and a family member.

The victim would experience pain, incredible mental shifts, spasms, his body would make disgusting noises, the victim would spit, sweat, vomit.... Waves of heat and cold could sweep across the room. Objects could move: furniture, clothes, lamps, toys...

About the plot

In the family of successful actress Chris Macneil suddenly comes trouble: her 14-year-old daughter is at the mercy of an incomprehensible disease. At first the symptoms resemble a mild mental disorder, but the course of treatment does not bring the desired results. Moreover, the girl's condition has significantly worsened, she began to behave more aggressively, throwing herself at relatives and friends, insulting doctors.

What could happen to a person who previously behaved like an angel? Science can not give a clear answer to this question. Desperate mother decides to seek help from a psychologist, so that he, using hypnosis, was able to determine the cause of her daughter's illness. The result only confirmed the worst fears - there is definitely someone or something else in the girl's body. And this named guest every day shows itself more and more active ...

Against the background of one terrible tragedy in the McNeil family, the director very professionally shows another - this time the evil fate dooms to torment a young priest, who seems to have finally lost his faith after the death of his mother. In this he blames, of course, himself, because not only could not help her in a difficult moment, but, even, was not around in that terrible hour.
The feelings that overwhelmed the Holy Father at that moment can not be described in words. Only one thing is clear - he was oppressed by despair, destructive and pernicious.

As we can see, and the actress and the priest are experiencing far from the best period in life. But that's what brings them together. They can help each other, but whether this help will be two-way - the question. By agreeing to the rite of exorcism, the Holy Father consciously signs his own death warrant, because his adversary knows no weakness. His adversary knows no reproach or pity. His adversary is fearless and all-powerful. His adversary is the Devil himself!

Conclusion

Despite the fact that the movie is quite educational, it is still, first and foremost, a horror movie. Its main task is to scare, which significantly narrows the audience contingent. Accordingly, children and weak-nerved movie is contraindicated and confirmation of this mental illness Linda Blair, who played the lead role in this movie.
