Review 4K Movie
Few people are willing to tell their acquaintances about what phobias they have, as it can often seem like something ridiculous and not taken seriously at all. And yet, each of us is afraid of something special and gets nervous every time an encounter with it looms. Many people are justifiably afraid of flying even though, according to statistics, airplanes are the safest mode of transportation out of those invented by man. Clowns, dressed in colorful costumes and sometimes making completely unnatural sounds, also get their share of attention. It is not surprising that for children their presence at the holiday becomes not at all fun, but a real stress, with which you can not cope until older age. However, the greatest spread among phobias is the fear of spiders, also known as arachnophobia. The reasons why people can not restrain their emotions at the sight of these arthropods can be very different. Already from early childhood, a person observes how people around him behave, and if someone in his presence has a fear of spiders, it is likely to be transferred to the child. Spiders also cause anxiety with their aggressive behavior towards insects, creepy web cocoons and other nuances that often cause unpleasant associations in people. And to cure their phobia, individuals suffering from it have to directly face the object of their fear, which not everyone is willing to do. But to watch spiders through the screen without any consequences can most people, which in turn and take advantage of the directors, seeking to use various phobias for the benefit of their creativity. Mika Gallo could not deny himself in this, and shot 'Spidey' for the sake of giving the audience what they need and at the same time pay tribute to the good old horror movies about giant monsters, which are now not in the best creative shape.
The plot of the movie introduces us to nurse Kara Spencer (Elizabeth Roberts), who together with her children, Jesse (Armand Darbo) and Cambria (Chloe Perrin), moves to a new place of residence to forget about the former hardships that caused the whole family a lot of pain. Having accepted the invitation of an elderly gentleman Walter Clark (Bruce Dafison), Kara takes up residence with him as an assistant and nurse, and it seems as if everything should finally work out in the best way, but the situation turns out to be just the opposite. At first, Kara and her children actually thought that nothing more bad should happen in their lives, and yet it soon turns out that Walter has one weakness that he just can't fight. Collecting ancient art objects like various caskets and amphorae, the old man did not believe that they could bring harm to anyone because of some possible curse or ancient virus, but soon in his house appeared one extremely dangerous object that carries a special danger. As it turned out, there was a giant spider inside of it, just waiting to be released so that it could replenish itself with human juices. Gaining weight and thus doubling its aggression, the predator acts cunningly, waiting for its victims in traps and giving no one a chance to escape. And yet Kara and her children manage to withstand the nightmarish creature, but their chances of success are constantly melting, because the spider does not stop its development for a moment, digging into the body of everyone who was cornered. The most horrible thing in this situation is that the woman can not rely on outside help and has to face the revived nightmare directly, and this is for anyone, even not suffering from arachnophobia, a big test.
It can not be said that this movie is distinguished by something really special, but one can not help but admit that it is interesting to watch. The story itself turned out to be quite simple, although the appearance of a spider in the old man's house was quite unexpected. Previously, such predators were banally wandering through the jungle, bred in secret government laboratories or were brought in the luggage of travelers to the big city. Now the spider came into the plot of the movie by means of an ancient archaeological artifact, which in company with other decorative attributes of the film set creates a special atmosphere of enticing mystery. And it is on it that the picture is mostly kept, which is not that much frightening, but is able to enthrall without much effort. The story, told by Mick Gallo, develops competently and unhurriedly, so that we could find out who exactly came to the house of a rich old man, and who really is the owner of the house, who devotes too much time to his hobby. Even the spider himself gets his own time for development, who gets a special place in the story. The director diligently shows us the gradual maturation of the arthropod monster, and it can cause a slight disgust, but we must admit that in terms of naturalism the movie is fine.
Mick Gallo was once a filmmaker who made special effects and practical stunts, so it's safe to say that the spider in his movie is really creepy and unpleasant. Using classical techniques and modern technology, Gallo tried for a small amount of money to do everything possible to make no one doubt that this monster can be a real danger, and therefore the impressionable viewers will have a hard time in the moments when the spider gnaws into someone's body and destroys it with pleasure. There are quite a lot of such scenes in the film and the director literally relishes them, paying tribute to the horrors of the past era, which were not afraid to be what they are and frightened the audience with a true nightmare. But for all the production's merits, it must be recognized that it still feels somewhat secondary, preventing Gallo from turning all the intriguing rudiments of the script in the right direction. While watching it, one feels that 'Spidey' could have gone much farther psychologically, revealed the characters from a really unexpected side, and played a mystical card that could have been appropriate even in the story with a spider. However, in reality we get only a tense atmosphere and a cruel arthropod killer. It's not bad, but it also feels like Gallo's work is seriously lacking in some areas. This can be partly attributed to a lack of directorial experience, but the producers could have put a skillful consultant to the director, and then the situation could have been quite different.
In the end, I would like to say that 'Spidey' looks like quite a good horror movie, which has a lot of interesting details. Mika Gallo boldly plays with the phobias of millions of people, while not forgetting to entertain sufferers with quality effects and unexpected scenes. Of course, the movie could have been much more profound, but as an unburdening attraction it worked very well.
