Rejoice, you who suffer, for your hour has come! Holy Friday has arrived, on the evening of which paradise will open its doors to you! On this day, a majestic and beautiful weekend will triumphantly crush the gray and dull everyday life. Deafening music will burst under your skin, pierce you with its rhythm like a syringe, forever ridding your body of fatigue. Special pills will explode your head and take it to the clouds. The intoxicating smoke will fill your lungs, stopping time and turning it into an endless sweet high. And then a brightly colored tattoo will blaze on the forehead of a world drowning in fun: "Music, Drugs and Sex!".

There are enough films about drug use and its tragic consequences to constitute a separate genre. From serious ones like the notorious Requiem for a Dream and Salton Sea, to semi-serious ones like The High Fives, to silly comedies like Stoned. And when the British make these films, they almost always sparkle with fresh humor, a unique “vision,” and appropriate quirks, and they are also associated with the name Irvine Welsh (The Acid House and Trainspotting are the best examples). Human Traffic is from the same series.

Only Carrigan's hour-and-a-half clip caught my attention in a special way. It's very much like real life. The idea is simple. When Friday comes and you don't have to go to your damn job the next day, go out with your friends to a cool club, take ecstasy, and party hard!

The director's approach to filming is traditional, as far as one can judge the continuity in a genre where every minute has to surprise the viewer with original stunts and gags, otherwise it won't work... Everything works perfectly here.

There's something else. Ecstasy in this film is inextricably linked to music. And despite the short-lived and fickle nature of fashion ten years after the film's release, Pete Tong's soundtrack hasn't lost any of its infectious energy and sounds as cool as a classic. Almost all genres of electronic music are represented here—hip-hop, jungle, house, techno, trance. The name of the prison rap group alone is worth a lot—Ichchi Trigger Finger Niggers. This is tied up in a tangle of emotions in the dialogues of characters who are similar to us, the modern youth.

Why ecstasy?
“I feel best when I'm high. I give myself over to the music and... Do you understand me?”

A good half of the film is devoted to getting to know the characters. Their philosophy, spiced up with a generous helping of excellent profanity (I tried to watch the film in the original language a couple of times and didn't understand a word because of the thick Cockney accent), is simple. Forget about your problems. Today you can be free. Spend all your money, screw everything. Take advantage of it!

Honestly, while you're dancing with the characters of this simple story, which is almost completely devoid of plot, you want to think that way too. You want to drink in a pub, race through the night streets in a car, go from party to party, and let loose like they do. But then morning comes and... You can find out what happens in the film.
