Review 4K Movie
Scanners are people with unusual telepathic abilities, who can read the thoughts of others, control people by suggesting their own thought images, control their actions, exert remote physical influence and even kill by the power of sight and thought. After all, scanning is not just telepathy, it is the ability to connect two consciousnesses, two nervous systems into one and then control another person. You can make his heart beat at a furious speed or stop it, you can raise blood pressure so that veins burst or head explodes. A scanner can connect to the most secret computer and start controlling its actions and programs. That's why scanners are extremely dangerous. Some call them telepathic misunderstandings. And ConSec, a corporation that sells weapons and security systems, is tracking down and catching scanners for the safety of the entire society. Moreover, there is a very strong scanner Darryl Rivok, who gathers such phenomena into a powerful organization, deciding to seize power over the world and people. Those who refuse to join his squad, he simply kills.
But Dr. Paul Root, one of the leaders of “ConSec”, finds another strong scanner - Cameron Vale, who gets the task to find Rivok and infiltrate his group. It turns out that in addition to Rivok's group, there is another group of underground scanners fighting Rivok. “ConSec” produces a drug, the tranquilizer ephemerol, which is what the groups are fighting over. It creates scanners and allows them to control their abilities.
David Cronenberg is a director who has made quite a few films in the sci-fi horror genre. Several of them were about human superpowers - the theme is mysterious, frightening and tantalizing at the same time. “Dead Zone”, ‘Videodrome’, ‘Existence’, ‘The Fly’ - those movies that have already become classics of the genre and that probably everyone has seen. “Scanners” is less known to modern viewers, although the movie was a huge success after its release and spawned two more sequels, which were not directed by Cronenberg, and they went straight to video, not to the big screens. But also enjoyed success, although the popularity of the original can not be compared with the popularity of the original.
It would seem that there are no special effects in “Scanners”. There were a couple of exploding heads, the role of which were performed by moulages with dog food and rabbit liver, which on the set spread shotgun shot. And this trick was then repeated in many movies. There were pyrotechnic effects, when a man instantly became a flaming torch, there were chases, shootouts, explosions. And, of course, visually absolutely fantastic duel of two scanners - antagonists in the finale, when the opponents apply all their abilities of destroying each other, along with discovering in themselves a new ability, which makes the finale open and unexpected. Nothing groundbreaking, it seems. But in this movie all the components are so fitted to each other, which makes the picture stand out from its peers. Howard Shore's music in the movie works to create a depressive-tense atmosphere, evoking a sense of unease and anxiety. The skill of cameraman Mark Irwin makes the visuals so expressive and believable, immersing the viewer in the picture. And Cronenberg's direction flawlessly builds the storyline, stringing on it all the accelerating action, increasing the tension with each scene, making the actors work in a unified ensemble and style, where each character is well-defined, endowed with his character and motivations. All of these components as a result made the movie a cult movie in its time. It collected a whole crop of prizes and awards at various festivals. “Saturn” and ‘Genie’ awards, ‘Fantasporto’ festival recognized it as the best film, noting also awards for the best make-up and special effects. “Genie” in 1982 showered the film - besides the one already named - with a rain of awards: for best screenplay, best director, best editing, best costumes and best supporting actor, which went to Michael Ironside. The villain Darryl Rivock, played by him, was so expressive and bright that overshadowed the main characters, but this in general played the movie only to the advantage, and the role became for Ironside truly stellar hour.
Now that the merits of Google glasses are being vividly debated on the Internet, this movie is even more frightening and disturbing. Who knows how the achievements of high technology, which give a man absolutely fantastic abilities, but do not change anything in his moral and ethical postulates, may turn out. Progress is moving forward, much of what seemed impossible yesterday is not even surprising today. Genetic engineering, cloning, space means of communication and tracking have long ago turned fantasists' dreams into reality. Who knows what other superpowers a man can get tomorrow with the help of new technologies and discoveries. And whether they will not become his nightmare in the future. Cronenberg warns us of this with his movie.
