This film was directed by a woman. Barbara Peters. She was assisted by a certain Murakami (not Haruki!), but the fact remains that Murakami didn't even make it into the credits. But Ms. Peters showed up a lot of male directors who were frantically tearing apart the newly formed genre at the time, trying to make everything as good and as bloody as possible, better than their competitors. It's worth mentioning that the film is greatly helped by decent special effects and excellent action scenes. The monster costumes, of course, aren't exactly spectacular and look rather cartoonish, but the work has been done - that's a fact. And the humans are just adorable. There's blood galore! The deformities are perfectly done. There's flesh and mutilated bodies everywhere you look. And Ms. Peters generously embellished the film with boobs (I'd shout “real man!” here, but Barbara probably wouldn't approve). What's more, these tits aren't growing on life-worn cooks from the local Big Mac joint or skinny village girls looking for easy fame, but on quite beautiful and well-built girls. The action scenes are shot and edited very well, especially the final massacre at the fair...

And a few words about the creators. Thanks to the seasoned Doug McCluir and Vic Morrow, who, while not exactly geniuses, play quite relaxed and well. Thanks also to the young actors, who didn't shy away from the masters and didn't fade into the background, but played their parts quite convincingly. Especially Anthony Penna, who played a character named Indian. The composer is James Horner (yes, the same one who wrote the music for Titanic, damn it! Well, and a hundred other famous films), and the editor is Mark Goldblatt, a well-known figure in editing circles. Together they created...

Cruel, but spectacular. Silly, but interesting. The film is fresh and easy to watch, with no unnecessary dialogue or other nonsense, but plenty of interesting action. Blood. Boobs. More blood. Vic Morrow, who would have his head torn off three years later on the set of The Twilight Zone due to a botched stunt. And, of course, Humanoids from the Deep.
