Story Movie

Five brutal cops were sitting in a late-night diner. The usual male chatter was interrupted by an emergency call. The group was ordered to check out an abandoned house in the woods. They got into a patrol car and drove off - the usual thing, the daily routine. But not this time. Half-destroyed and empty, at first glance, the house turned out to be the anteroom of hell, swarming with terrible monsters. And each of the policemen here is destined for monstrous torture, each according to his sins.

Review 4K Movie

What is the most important thing in a horror film? The script? Scary special effects? The actors' performances? Sometimes the main criterion for evaluating a “scary film” is the atmosphere—an elusive mix of images, sounds, and moods... Many outstanding representatives of the genre—David Lynch, Wes Craven, Clive Barker—create films that are powerful precisely because of their atmosphere: an indefinable concentration of nightmare, dream, and terrifying reality.

Baskin hooked me with its atmosphere. Even if you turn off the sound, what remains is a frightening, viscous black space with disturbing red flashes—a piece of meat in a bucket carried by someone in a hood, the lights of a police car driving off into the night, spots of light on the facade of an abandoned house... and towards the end, these red spots merge into a rich stream of blood color, flooding absolutely everything on the screen. It's an amazing work with visual images, immersing you in an almost hypnotic state.

And now we add sound. Burning flesh. The wet rustling of frogs in a bucket. The quiet muttering of roadside vagrants, weaving together into a dark prophecy. The sound of tormented flesh. And the devilish whisper of the leader of a mad cult.

The linear story begins to twist and turn in the first third, returning to the starting point of the story: a roadside cafe where five policemen eat, swear, get into a fight, and share their most intimate secrets. Sometimes the story jumps further back, into the past of the newcomer Arda, to tell a terrifying story about the ghost that torments him at night. In contrast to the disgustingly detailed shots in the scary house, this story is presented as a dialogue between two people—but it is filmed in such a way that you can't look away. This mystical triangle—a ghost from the past, a gloomy cafe, and a scary house—begins to spin, winding the fates of the five characters around it... and sometimes their guts.
All this would be enough to make Baskin a vivid and original representative of Turkish (!) horror, but novice director Can Evrenol goes even further and finds a terrifying antagonist in a parking lot—a short man with a disfigured face who doesn't need makeup—it's enough to light him up so that your soul runs away. Well, monsters are often found in parking lots in movies (The Human Centipede 2, The Parking Lot), so why shouldn't monster actors be found there too? Mehmet Jerahoglu gives a terrifying performance, and the fact that The Key was not his first and last work proves his powerful potential.

I know that not everyone liked this film, but for me, it combined everything I look for in the genre: mystery, a thick atmosphere of fear, helplessness in the face of relentless evil—and the real talent of those who make this film. Bravo!
