Back in 2010, I stumbled upon the trailer for Eli Roth's new film Clown, produced by Quentin Tarantino. What I saw impressed me immensely. In a way, it was like Tim Allen's Santa Claus, only instead of Santa, the main character was dressed as a demon clown. It was a reimagining of the old story in the spirit of Santa for Sale. There was no information about the film anywhere, except that it was supposed to be released soon. Along with Silent Hill 2, this film became a ghostly legend for me, one that was unlikely to ever become a reality. Only Silent Hill 2 was actually filmed, but the trailer was just a fan creation. And there was no news about The Clown. Until recently.

And then, in early 2015, I stumbled upon the trailer for The Clown again. It was frame by frame the same as the 2010 trailer, only the actors and music were different. Tarantino was no longer listed in the credits, and Eli Roth was now listed as the producer, not the director. I was a little wary, but I still found the film with a single voiceover. I didn't expect much from the film anymore. Too much time had passed since my initial excitement at seeing the old trailer.
The film itself looks like a trashy knockoff. The effects are pretty cheap, and the actors are either overacting or underacting. But that's the charm of it. You watch and enjoy the flow of information that you see and hear. It's like watching the House of 1000 Corpses movies — it's not that scary or that funny, but you want to watch it until the end.

If you're expecting to see a sea of blood, this is definitely not the place. There is blood, but it's sparingly distributed throughout the film. If you want wild horror, like in Astral and Sinister, this isn't the place either, although these films are reminiscent in places. So what is there in this film? There's a decent horror story and a little humor. It's all pretty average, but for some reason, I personally found it thrilling.

I don't know what would have happened to the film if Eli Roth had made it in 2010, but it would certainly have been bloodier and scarier.
