Lost in the forests of West Virginia by a fateful set of circumstances, a group of young men try to reach the nearest telephone. But instead of a phone, they are destined to find a house in the mountains, hung with terrible weapons and gruesome trophies. Who or what lives in this house? The young men begin to realize that all their misadventures are a way to trap the game, where they are the game and the sinister hunters are the inhabitants of the house.

In essence, Wrong Turn is the twin brother of Alexander Aja's The Hills Have Eyes, as they are so similar in plot, style, tension, and violence. The main difference is the setting. In The Hills, it is a desert, while in Wrong Turn, the slasher arena is a forest. And the Frenchman Azha spilled a lot more blood than the American Schmidt. But otherwise, they are practically identical, you handsome guys!
Wrong Turn is a pure slasher film, without any “hidden meaning,” pseudo-intellectual thoughts, side plots, or semantic load. It's all very simple: they got lost, met some vicious, bloodthirsty freaks, and fought to the death! In fact, it's non-stop action in the horror genre. It's filmed in a lively, harsh, and competent manner.

In general, Wrong Turn is good primarily because when you watch it (provided you love the genre), you really disconnect from the outside world and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the film. You don't think, you don't strain, you don't get bored, you don't focus on blunders and plot inconsistencies... you just watch the movie and enjoy it! Of course, you initially assume that “this one and that one will probably survive,” but that doesn't take away from the thrill of watching what's happening on screen. This is a case where “how it's filmed” is more important than “what it's about.” Yes, Wrong Turn is not an original film, but the simple story is told in a very entertaining way.

I don't think Schmidt's film will ever be elevated to the rank of a horror classic, but it will always be associated with worthy representatives of the genre. Even if the film is forgotten a week after viewing, the hour and a half spent watching it is worth the pleasure that most horror fans will get.
