Story Movie

A young couple has taken refuge from the world in a forest cabin at the edge of the world. No one in the world seems to know of their existence... except for three uninvited masked guests.

Review 4K Movie

Is the movie based on a true story? No, the plot is fictional. This is so that after seeing it, the audience understands how the inhabitants of remote houses are not immune to uninvited guests. The title credits say what happened, immediately making it clear about the end of the crazy night. And the first shots already close the proceedings, showing the aftermath.

At night, a couple of young people return to their house. The viewer initially feels the tension between the characters. The intrigue is maintained, and the attention to detail in director Brian Bertino is excellent, so we gradually learn about Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman. The conflict, the understatements transition into a smooth reveal so that we are transported back a few hours and watch the happy faces of the characters.

In addition to the sound effects, the picture plays with the viewer with story tunes emanating from a gramophone, so when a loud knock on the door comes after the iridescent motifs, you realize the suspense has begun. It's a flawless play on the psyche, on perception. What's frustrating is that we know the ending, and now we're watching the characters come to it. What was that knock on the door? The movie answers the question. Just when you're getting used to the idea that all is well, suddenly Liv Tyler has to be left alone. That's where the mysterious events begin.

Yes, there are questions to the picture. Logic in some places can play out, and the heroine does not act the way she should. But for the audience is specially brought to the fact that the girl is bullied. Therein lies the essence of psychological tension and “screemers”. A big house, windows to the courtyard (and James Stewart with a camera watching, it would be nice), and you are constantly haunted by knocks on the door, noises in the street. It's creepy and scary. Yes Tyler is panicking all over the place.

The return of Scott Speedman kicks off the survival game stage. There are more silly moments at that, but smoothly the circumstances line up. We see strangers playing with victims. Karina wins on psychological tension, you really feel the characters being scared, losing control and making mistakes. It's creepy.

By the masks of the villains, “Stranger Things” reminded immediately of James DeMonaco's “Judgment Night”, and by the scene in the hotel of Michael Haneke's “Funny Games”. The picture introduces violence gradually, amusing its victims to the last. It's creepy and scary. In general, “Strangers” looks tense, despite the fact that the finale is known from the beginning, it fades into the background, leaving only worries for the characters.
