Story Movie

Hector is quite content with his life: a loving wife, a house in the country. One day his attention is drawn to a half-naked girl glimpsed in the woods, and driven by curiosity, the man sets out to find out what is going on there. In the woods he is attacked by a man whose face is hidden by bloody bandages. Hiding from the stranger's pursuit, Hector accidentally gets into a time machine.

Review 4K Movie

Once upon a time, an ordinary Spaniard named Hector was observing the surroundings near his house through binoculars when he noticed something strange in the forest. His curiosity got the better of him, and he set off to investigate, which three of his projections would later regret, maiming each other for no reason. The cause of all this was a laboratory on a hill, where the Spanish prototype of Shurik decided to test a pool-like time machine. Time travel here is accompanied by clichés taken from various works, such as the fact that you cannot meet yourself, unaware of the existence of your chrono-doubles, and, under no circumstances, can you try to change anything, because then you can remain in a time trap forever — at most, you can make minor adjustments.

The saddest thing is that there is no justification for these clichés—the restless scientist says that it is not worth disrupting the course of events, but from the actions of the characters, we see that the creators tend to adhere to the theory that it is impossible to change anything, no matter how hard Hector tries, which is why the plot is somewhat predictable, because the viewer knows from the beginning how the action will unfold, and with each new Hector, they only receive information about what remains “behind the scenes.” . And since the hero is not threatened by a violation of the space-time continuum followed by the destruction of the world, his main problem will be to get a chance to change anything at all, because his arbitrary attitude towards science leads him to undesirable consequences.

Perhaps the hero's actions are not entirely justified, but the film is uncompromising in this regard and does not give us a chance to find out what would have happened if Hector had acted differently and not pretended to be a psychopath just because someone had to be one. This makes the ending all the more controversial, in which the hero could have tried to avoid casualties and change something—he had plenty of time, and the director shows this in the episode with the deck chairs. But Hector did nothing, and this, perhaps, is the essence of the film, a philistine, rather than a heroic, philosophy, because if he had tried to change the situation so that everyone would be happy, it would have been bad for him again—the number of bruises would have increased exponentially with each new “journey.”

That is why the film shows the beginnings of existential drama—the most banal of philosophies, which became incredibly relevant for the artistic works of the mid-20th century, striving for realism. Therefore, in terms of worldview, this film is somewhat more mature than its predecessors, which often preach that risk is a noble cause, while Timecrimes clearly responds that it is safer to sit still and stay put. That is why the ending portrays the hero in a negative light, but considering what he has been through in the last few hours, it is quite natural.

It should also be noted that the Spanish title of the film is the intricate Los cronocrímenes, because, due to circumstances, the protagonist, an unremarkable citizen, turns into a seasoned violator of moral and criminal norms. Considering that there is little logic in this transformation, the credibility of the character is ensured by the performance of Carra Elejalde, for whom the film became an excellent demonstration of his skill—where else could an actor convincingly play the hero, the villain, and the victim at the same time, thus showing that it is sometimes more interesting to watch the development of the character than the plot twists.

Conclusion: a low-budget science fiction film on the theme of time travel, which, although it does not bring anything fundamentally new to the genre, offers a different, everyday perspective on temporal paradoxes, which is its strong point.
