Story Movie

An elderly man, barely breathing after being bitten by a strange plant, is brought to the hospital. While the doctors were trying to figure out what had happened, a worm crawled out of the already dead man and began to grow at an alarming rate. Meanwhile, the authorities declared the hospital a contaminated zone and ordered the military to place it under quarantine. Everyone in the hospital found themselves cut off from the world and locked in with the worm, which had already transformed into a huge, bloodthirsty insect. Police officer Jim Bishop, doctor Rachel Carson, and scientist Elliott Jacobs will face off against the monster.

Review 4K Movie

A run-of-the-mill horror film that isn't the least bit scary, directed by the little-known “B-movie” filmmaker William Frut. This film can be viewed more or less positively only among its peers; from the perspective of world cinema, however, it is hardly even worthy of mention in any reference guides or books on film.

So, an old man was strolling through a greenhouse. He popped in to visit an elderly lady friend, so to speak (Casanova, damn him). After touching a rose, he picked up an unknown insect from it, which killed the old man. Once in the hospital, a worm crawled out of him, looking like feces dried in the sun. Later, some kind of beetle crawled out of the worm (how complicated it all is), which, thanks to the efforts of some annoying kids looking for adventure, who fed it some cleverly concocted hormone to accelerate its growth, mutated into a giant mantis, settled in the hospital basement, and acquired a Queen who lays eggs (I can just picture Frut, trembling with delight, frantically taking notes on *Aliens*, which had come out a year earlier).

I have to say, it’s a decent movie. A solid, run-of-the-mill film, so to speak. It has perfectly serviceable, if somewhat cheap, special effects, and perfectly competent actors in the lead roles (the local entomologist, despite being an idiot, isn’t annoying at all—it’s actually kind of surprising). The plot is fairly straightforward, except for a few contrived details (the bug can be destroyed by an experimental laser that just HAPPENS to be in the hospital’s dungeons). There are a couple of annoying characters (the kids, the future dad who calculates everything down to the millimeter), but thankfully they don’t get much screen time.

It’s a pretty decent one-time watch, standing out from similar films thanks to the presence of a perfectly sane killer bug that doesn’t look like a papier-mâché scarecrow. But it can’t escape the “B-movie” category, no matter how hard the creators try. And the dreary soundtrack lets it down.
