George Miller, an unsuccessful artist, decides to take his own life on Halloween night. But after jumping off the roof, he somehow doesn’t die, even though it’s impossible to survive such a fall. After leaving the hospital, he begins to be haunted by nightmares in which he kills strangers, and it later turns out that these murders actually took place. George and his friends try to figure out what is really happening to him, and it gradually becomes clear that George isn’t always George. From time to time, his body is taken over by someone else possessing a terrifying, sinister power. Someone who brought George back from the dead for some unknown purpose.

It leans more toward horror and the supernatural than science fiction, since the transfer and possession of souls occur without any mechanical means—spontaneously, so to speak. And these scenes are staged, as befits the main plot, with all the cinematic magic of the ’80s—from color correction and lighting to magnificent musical accompaniment, close-ups of the actors with their incredibly charismatic and expressive facial performances, and the most budget-friendly stunts and special effects available. In the opening scene, the musical intro to the title sequence—a simple drive through the city at night, serving as a backdrop to the credits—was stunning, rendered in the color palette of the 80s. And in the finale, of course, there is the deeply emotional Leslie Wing. Very deeply.

The filmmakers tried to fill the space between these scenes—the film itself—with every cinematic technique available to the craftspeople working at the time. Here, the musical score builds suspense, and the horrors are both vividly rendered and mannequin-like. Shots with different color tones for various emotional responses in the viewer—reality in bright, warm tones, the mystical in gray-green. And there are also transitional scenes—striped—from the shadows of the blinds. There are magnificent close-up shots of the actresses conveying beautiful emotions. Only the protagonist remains in a single facial mask, barely moving her facial muscles throughout the plot.

Amid all this visual apparatus, the suspense is lost. The film fails to strike a chord of intrigue in the viewer’s emotional arsenal. It simply tells a story—a fictional one, not a real one. And this is precisely where a veil of mystery should have been allowed to creep in...
