Review 4K Movie

A brother and sister come to visit their mother's grave. The brother scares his sister with stories about zombies, unaware that they are very close to reality. Suddenly, a dead man attacks them—the brother is killed, and Barbara runs away, discovering a farmhouse along the way. After a while, Ben, whose car has run out of gas, drives up to it. They decide to stay in the house and prepare to defend themselves.

It's no secret that after working with George Romero on the film Martin, Savini and Romero continued their collaboration on Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead. It was against the backdrop of this collaboration that they became close friends and earned the top awards in their careers and, accordingly, recognition. It is therefore not surprising that Romero chose a remake of George Romero's film for his directorial debut.

Usually, when watching a remake of a film, whether you want to or not, you involuntarily start comparing the two films and choosing the one you think is better. However, in the case of George Romero's Night of the Living Dead and its remake by director Tom Savini, you feel something different. This is because we have a rare example of two films that do not “compete” with each other, but rather complement each other.

It is worth acknowledging that George Romero's original film was primarily a story about people and approached the story from a much deeper perspective. But it looked somewhat low-budget and outdated from a technical point of view. This film by director Tom Savini shows a diametrically opposite picture.

Despite the fact that Savini's film is essentially a verbatim repeat of the original, it has a less profound story, and its philosophical reflections on American individualism and racism seem rather superficial. However, the film works much better as an entertaining story, and with a different ending from the remake, it leads the viewer to a different moral—about cruelty as part of human nature.

A similar situation can be observed in terms of directing. Romero's film still gives the impression of a magnificent example of a very low-budget film, whose weak technical side is perfectly compensated for by its artistically magnificent direction. When creating this film, Savini took a much more “direct” approach. From an artistic point of view, we have a fairly traditional genre product. However, the magnificent practical effects and makeup, as well as the masterfully sustained gloomy atmosphere, allow you to watch what is happening on the screen with bated breath.

Definitely one of the main advantages of this film is the magnificent cast, led by Tony Todd and Tom Towles. For the first time in my memory, Todd played a positive character and gave a very lively performance. Taulz, on the other hand, perfectly embodied his character on an emotional level, and as a result, you hate his character with all your heart throughout the entire film.
