Creating sequels to certain films has always been a delicate matter. On the one hand, if you try to introduce something new, viewers—and especially fans of the original—may not appreciate the experimentation. On the other hand, if you stick to the fundamental elements of the original, the viewer may simply grow bored with yet another repetition of what they’ve already seen. In creating this film, Romero decided to find a middle ground.

Similar to *Dawn of the Dead*, Romero’s film is a sort of symbiosis between a drama about people (rather than zombies) as the main characters and a genre horror film with elements of an action movie. However, while Dawn of the Dead leaned more toward the former, in this case we have a more traditional and genre-specific product—at least in terms of visuals and atmosphere. That said, there was far less spectacle and gory violence in this film than in Dawn of the Dead. Nevertheless, the film made significant strides in this regard.

One of the main strengths of "Dawn of the Dead", which audiences and critics loved so much, was the magnificent practical effects and makeup. It’s no surprise, then, that Tom Savini returned to create them, and in this case, he surpassed himself, crafting even more impressive effects. They still look incredibly cool and are a delight to behold. It’s worth noting that he was assisted on this film by the equally legendary Greg Nicotero, for whom *Day of the Dead* marked his full-fledged debut.

In terms of the story, the film once again explores the theme of the cruelty of human nature. However, the film definitely fails to say anything new in this regard. It presents viewers with a well-worn and overused story that lacks a single truly vivid and lively character. Perhaps this explains why the acting comes across as completely “flat” and none of the actors really stand out while watching.
