Six months after the mysterious death of a high school senior, a new student named Chris transfers to the school. She is grieving the loss of her father and has no desire to make friends, but on her very first evening, she finds herself in the company of her classmates. One of the girls playfully blows an ancient Olmec whistle that Chris had found; the piercing sound deafens the group, and now they are haunted not only by terrifying visions but also by Death itself.

High school senior Chris (Daphne Keen) moves closer to her cousin Relo (Sky Yang) for personal—even tragic—reasons, and right away at school she encounters not only a lack of understanding from her peers, but also, to put it bluntly, a creepy artifact in the form of an ancient Aztec—who knows, maybe a skull or a whistle. Blowing into it is obviously a bad idea for just about everyone, even at the end of a party, but the genre demands it.

Corin Hardy, a relatively niche horror filmmaker, took the path of least resistance and has undoubtedly laid the groundwork for yet another film franchise with plenty of room for both him and just about anyone else to make their mark. The director insists that the manner of death is predetermined for every person, that it is unchangeable, and—crucially—that it is easy to trigger: all one needs to do is activate the artifact, thereby extending its effect to everyone present. A quarter of a century ago, something—albeit vaguely similar—seems to have already happened in cinema; however, the concept behind the debut *Final Destination* managed to branch out not only into a slew of sequels but also into widespread recognition, frequent references, a certain meme-worthiness, and—as time has shown, as it always does—a consistent narrative arc.

The future of "Whistle" remains deeply uncertain, as long as there are questions about its present. Casting actors based on racial and physical characteristics, a plotline that’s predictably formulaic—let’s just say, the fates of the characters are laid out along the timeline— bullying of the new kid by North American school lockers, an untrustworthy preacher—or rather, a half-preacher—a complete and total lack of self-preservation instinct, and simply a scattering of all manner of predictability—this is deafeningly bad in the mid-2020s. Great horror films didn’t do this anymore in the mid-2010s, and the greatest ones—not even in the mid-2000s.

“Whistle,” however, is capable of luring viewers in with its cozy sound (the heroine, Chris, following her father’s teachings, is into ’80s vinyl) and its intertitle music selection— “Iron Maiden,” whose references run throughout the film—though the main theme of the horror film, one must assume, is performed by a voice that is definitely not Bruce Dickinson’s—and here one cannot help but agree with the filmmakers’ musical choices.
