From the very beginning, “Barbarian” turns out to be not what it seems at first glance...

Spending the night in the same house with a guy she barely knows is strange enough in itself. But Tess (Georgina Campbell) took the risk, especially since Kit (Bill Skarsgård) seemed like a decent guy. And after spending the night without any issues, Tess went back to get her things, and everything went smoothly… Until the girl went down to the basement…

I was waiting! I was damn well waiting for Skarsgård’s character to show his true colors, for someone like Pennywise to burst out of him and start his sadistic rampage! But the film’s director and screenwriter, Zach Kreger, offered the audience a far more brutal turn of events than the cliché of a rapist and kidnapper!

“Barbarian,” which begins as a loose crossover with “Don’t Breathe,” is actually an original horror film that doesn’t shy away from abrupt plot twists and presents the audience with a rich blend of horror, thriller, mystery, and comedy.
There are ambiguous moments in the film when it seems the viewer should be scared and sitting with sweaty palms, watching the movements of Justin Long’s character, for example.

But at the same time, the chosen style of presentation—with this character’s constant cries of horror—can’t help but make you smile, even though, again, the viewer is supposed to be scared!

A mix of emotions—that’s probably what Kreger managed to achieve with his film. And that’s actually pretty cool. Potential villains turn into victims, abrupt breaks in certain story arcs are later bridged, and a character who seems like a hero—or rather, a pretty decent guy—turns out to be quite the scumbag (and you’ll find out why).

To be honest, certain aspects of the filmmaking, as well as details in the script, might lead viewers to think that Jordan Peele—who’s become famous for his unconventional take on the horror genre—had a hand in this film. And it’s quite possible that Mr. Peele’s influence is present here after all (even though he didn’t actually participate in the filming). It’s just that Peele and Kreger are longtime friends, and there’s a sense that while preparing and filming *Barbarian*, Kreger might have drawn a lot of inspiration from his friend.

Furthermore, the way the film’s events unfold is reminiscent of Tarantino’s *Proof of Death*, where the plot splits in two. Only here, Kreger went even further and “divided” his film into three parts, while still managing to tie them all together. And if you think about it, “Barbarian” sort of starts at the end (in terms of the events themselves), going back to the beginning and explaining what actually happened in the first third of the film—which surely took the audience by surprise.

There really is plenty to be surprised by. The film leaves you with mixed feelings (but not in the “liked it—didn’t like it” sense), because you don’t know how to classify it—as a dark comedy or a horror film.
