Review 4K Movie

Austin Tilden and his father, Thomas, work as medical examiners at the local morgue. One day, Austin and his girlfriend Emma decide to go to the movies to enjoy a romantic evening, but unexpectedly, Austin decides to stay and help his father finish a report. Meanwhile, Sheriff Sheldon brings a woman’s body to the building—one without a single bruise on her skin—and the autopsy subsequently reveals more and more evidence that the cause of death may have been a sacrificial ritual, even though no obvious injuries to her internal organs were found. Trapped, the relatives begin to realize the gravity of the situation—but it’s too late. The body, which at first glance seemed like a routine case, isn’t exactly happy about having been discovered in the first place…

A medical mystery horror film by Norwegian director André Øvredal, who previously made a name for himself with the fantasy horror mockumentary *Trollhunters* (2010). The screenplay for *The Autopsy of Jane Doe* (and not as its brilliant translator dubbed it) was written by Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing—both of whom worked on the TV series *Dead Summer*. Distribution was handled by the wonderful company “IFC Midnight” (“House of Tolerance,” “ATM,” “Annihilation,” “Blood Glacier,” “Babadook,” “Forest Serpent,” “Key to the Underworld,” “Slaughter Park,” and many others). I have just one question for the distributors: Will horror films of such shoddy, wretched quality continue to be released in wide distribution, while films like this one are deliberately overlooked? Or are you so strapped for cash that you’re forced to resort to extreme measures? (That’s my second question.) I have 2.50. In rubles!

At first, yours truly thought that Ovedal’s film would be oversaturated with necrophilia themes in the vein of the works of Nacho Cerde, Jörg Buttgereit, and Andrew Parkinson, but it turned out I was mistaken. I’d especially like to highlight the visual aspect, which includes realistic surgical scenes, excellent makeup for the walking dead, and stunning CGI effects. Brian Cox, Emile Hirsch, Michael McElhatton (I’ve long noticed this actor’s striking resemblance to the well-known German actor Udo Kier), and Ophelia Lovibond played their roles simply magnificently, leaving the audience with absolutely no cause for complaint.
Olwen Kelly, who portrayed the mysterious, lifeless body of a dead girl, is deeply impressive for her composure on set—after all, she had to lie motionless for several hours while still holding her position perfectly in the frame. This is definitely her best role. You certainly won’t get bored throughout the entire film, thanks to the captivatingly crafted plot. The atmosphere in several scenes is striking for its eerie silence, punctuated by the ringing of bells. There are flashes of “Silent Hill-esque suspense.” The editing and cinematography are top-notch! Many people complained about the ending, but believe me, it’s the best possible conclusion, explaining everything with crystal clarity. The final credits, set to an unsettling soundtrack, leave you reeling from the devastation wrought upon your emotional equilibrium…

If you were planning to watch something else today—set it aside immediately! Under no circumstances should you miss out on works of art like this. And fans of well-crafted, blood-curdling horror films absolutely must add this to their collection.
