The film runs for nearly two hours, and after the 40-minute mark, you’re left wondering what the filmmakers will come up with next. And what follows in this wild film—or rather, how everything unfolds—is both logical and harmonious, yet at the same time unpredictable. Gradually, the film, like a painting, “grows” new brushstrokes and becomes increasingly intriguing. The cinematography is fast-paced and dynamic. We’re simultaneously shown and told several stories of different people—wonderful, colorful, amusing, and funny. All the characters in this film are portrayed with the utmost skill. At first, it seems as though the narrative is disjointed, but over time, all the stories intertwine in one way or another. Each individual story of a particular character—or characters—unfolds in small doses, then shifts to another story, and so on, keeping the viewer constantly engaged. The film’s music is closely intertwined with the action on screen. Thanks to it, the film becomes even funnier; at times it turns serious, and at others, ironic. It’s the music that gives "Survive Style 5+" its unique charm.

It turns out that Japan can produce not only yakuza films and contemplative cinema, but also excellent, original comedies. The humor in *The Art of Survival* will be easily understood by everyone. For those just beginning to discover the world of Japanese cinema, it’s a good idea to start with *How to Survive 5+*. It’s a pretty successful introduction.

"Survive Style 5+" isn’t just a comedy; at times, the film takes on the qualities of a fairy tale and a drama. There’s also surrealism, farce, and something of a parable. In general, this film is a mix of all sorts of things—a sort of cocktail of genres.

“Survive Style 5+” features a guest appearance by an actor from across the sea—Vinnie Jones, a bruiser with the face of a butcher. It seems the Japanese—or perhaps the director himself—are fans of English “tough guys.” Or maybe it was just a coincidence that Jones happened to be in the right place at the right time. In any case, seeing Vinnie in a Japanese film came as an unexpected and pleasant surprise to me. In *The Art of Survival*, he appeared in my favorite role—and the only one (as crude as that may sound) that really suits him. After all, with his looks, he’d hardly be convincing as a poet or a Rastafarian, though perhaps someone might disagree with me. And the director didn’t cast him for that—he invited him to do what he does best.

The film delights first and foremost with its fresh perspective, interesting approaches, the actors, and, of course, its humor and music. Two hours of utter madness await you if you watch this creation by Gen Sekiguchi.
