Autumn night. In the yard in 1963. The wind howls in the street. The cries of neighbors' children suggest - today is the eve of All Saints Day! While most people expect Halloween Ultra HD to cut out Jack’s flashlight, Michael Myers is equally eagerly waiting for him to cut some people. Here, he puts on a mask and slowly climbs the stairs. In his hands the blade of a kitchen knife gleams. Just a couple of seconds and Michael will carry out the death sentence.

Fifteen years after that day, Myers escapes from a psychiatric institution and returns to his hometown, where he is looking for suitable victims to throw out his accumulated internal anger.

Who would have guessed that the low-cost Halloween project would have such an impact on the film industry? Of course, neither director John Carpenter, nor his original audience, who probably left the cinema with a paranoid mood, could find a safe space for themselves and wrapped in a blanket as soon as possible to forget what they saw, they could not even guess about it. One of the obvious moments of the success of "Halloween" is the attention to detail, which manifests itself in each frame. For example, in Lori’s room, you can see a reproduction of a self-portrait of the Belgian expressionist painter James Ensor, who among other things depicted in his paintings by means of grotesque carnivals of clowns - a look at human society as a masquerade. The words of the English writer Oscar Wilde that “the mask is always more expressive than the face; a masked man becomes liberated and can express the most secret and vicious movements of his soul, which he would never do in his usual state, ”fully reflected the worldview of Ensor, who drew images from his childhood memories. Perhaps Michael also tried on only someone else’s mask, letting the demon who was sleeping in him break out ?! Myers has no motive, he just kills indiscriminately. Perhaps this is just someone's curse, in which Michael is only a machine enforcing instructions? A machine perceived as the pure embodiment of evil. He does not say a word, and only an icy look under the bleached mask of Captain Kirk appears to the gaze, but nevertheless one turn of his head creates greater tension and anxiety than the villains owning a chainsaw or machete. The camera floats somewhere behind Michael’s shoulder hoping to solve his riddle, but as a result he finds only new questions. We do not know when he will strike his blow again. Only a blurred silhouette of his shadow, ominously sliding along the walls of dark rooms, as well as a terrible musical score with sharp themes, can tell about the approaching moment.

Although there are many memorable scenes, the episode from the prologue is the most prominent, in which young Myers puts on a clown mask and kills his victim. Shooting is carried out on behalf of the killer, which allows the viewer to become an unwitting participant, immersing him in the very epicenter of events and giving a hint that what happened on the screen could happen to absolutely anyone. To reinforce this sense of identification with the screen characters, most of the film is engaged in creating their worldly lives. The cozy home spaces where they live create a sense of security that is lost overnight when Myers invades these shelters. Even if at first glance there is nothing here, or there is no one, one should not rejoice ahead of time, because Carpenter is likely to correct this little misunderstanding in the next second. A very successful accusation of a security institution that is ultimately incapable of protecting lives in unforeseen situations.

Carpenter, faithful to his Hitchcock influence, creates a cavalcade of moments mostly consisting of scenes of persecution, combined with clearly absent episodes of bloody violence, which concludes with a clear hit to the main theme - evil never dies. Where is Michael now, who is he and what about him? We will never know (at least in the first part), but his heavy breathing seems to be remembered for a long time.

Yes, Halloween 4k is not perfect. The characters here behave foolishly and seem to have no peripheral vision at all, but this is already a feature of the genre that did not prevent Carpenter’s work from becoming a classic of cinema. “Halloween UHD” is a film that really made a significant revolution in the horror genre, creating a platform not only for modern films, but also becoming the godfather of the slasher genre!
