November 1995. Angela, a film studies student, is writing her thesis on “Audiovisual Violence.” She asks her advisor, Professor Figueroa, to retrieve several tapes from the university archives containing films that are banned from TV broadcast due to graphic scenes of violence, and she makes the same request to her classmate Cheme, who, according to rumors, has a collection of such films at home. Though slightly embarrassed, Figueroa manages to take one of the tapes from the “Pornography” section, and while watching the film in the university theater, he dies. Angela is the first to find the professor’s body, and she takes the tape home. It turns out that the tape contains a snuff film, and Chema recognizes the victim as Vanessa, a student at their university who went missing two years ago.

The story of “snuff” is horrifying. So horrifying, in fact, that when we hear the details on the crime news, we begin to feel disappointed in ourselves. How can a person be so cruel as to allow the “parasites of the mind”—the devil within, after all—to go unchecked? Well, here’s the thing…

People around the world have become lazy and utterly indifferent to everything. Often, trips, theater outings, and extreme sports become nothing more than frantic searches for masks to keep from going mad from this apathy and indifference. The soul’s instinct for self-preservation… In his superb film “Thesis,” Alejandro Amenábar forces us to reconsider our view of the cruelty of documented bullying and murders, turning the criminal into an avenger from the other side of the screen. No, not by justifying him, but by opening our eyes to friends, classmates, teachers, and idols. The film is a harsh, uncompromising metaphor, woven into the self-referentiality of an intellectual thriller. A masterpiece from a director expelled from the Film Academy, yet one who has not lost his voice.

And, of course, Eduardo Noriega! Without his participation, the film would have lost much of its impact. Having watched *Captain Alatriste*, *The Shooting Point*, and Amenábar’s early *Open Your Eyes*, I am convinced of this once again. The charisma of a serious actor destined to become a Spanish great, eyes the color of the night ocean—all these qualities brought Eduardo worldwide fame... He is excellent in "Thesis". And Amenábar takes his own brand of revenge on the academics who failed him in college, allowing himself to be very sincere in the film. Keeping the main intrigue alive, I lose myself in the film, quickly running through the blood-red corridors of the Madrid Film and Television University, descending into the prop room and, trying not to breathe, waiting for the killer...
