The 1985 film The Protector is a rare example of Jackie Chan’s Hollywood experiment, one that is often criticized for losing his signature style due to the tight control of American director James Glickenhaus, who sought to transform the kung fu star into a run of the mill cop from a B movie action flick. The story of a New York cop investigating a crime in Hong Kong suffers from excessive seriousness, weak humor, and a lack of the choreographed fight sequences characteristic of Chan’s early work; however, the film is saved by a few standout action scenes, Jackie’s own charisma and chemistry with his partner Danny Aiello, as well as the nostalgic aesthetic of the era. For the full experience, it is highly recommended to watch the extended Hong Kong version, as it contains more fight sequences and better conveys the actor’s vision, while the 4K files available today are merely enhanced copies of old masters that do not offer fundamentally new image quality, but do allow you to appreciate the film at the highest resolution currently available.
