Story Movie

Two seasoned Swedish detectives arrive in a tiny Norwegian town to help the inexperienced local police investigate the murder of a young woman. The “meticulous” killer makes a single misstep, allowing the detectives to set a trap for him. But through a ridiculous turn of events in thick fog, the highly experienced detective Jonas Engström accidentally kills his partner and lets the criminal—who witnessed the fatal accident—escape. Now Engström, who finds himself at the mercy of the killer, must not only cover his tracks but also solve the crime without betraying his unwitting accomplice.

Review 4K Movie

I love both *Insomnia* films. So similar, yet so different. Though, of course, I realize that hardly anyone would watch this first one without having first seen Al Pacino and Robin Williams.

There’s something about this run-of-the-mill little detective story, with a white fog thrown in for good measure—a white fog that hangs over a day that never ends. A white-white fog—how could you hide blood in it? How could you hide a gunshot? Could you even hide yourself? What nonsense. And what kind of nonsense can you get into if you imagine that none of this is real. That none of it counts. That it’s not chronic insomnia—but just a long, long dream.

And every now and then, the faces of certain people—or people who aren’t them at all—emerge from the fog. It’s pointless to try to remember them; they won’t be there tomorrow. You have to use them. Make them talk. Kill them so it’s just like in the book. Scare them. Lie. Confuse them. Love them.

I know what drew Nolan to this story. He simply realized that it’s about a man who was walking, following in the footsteps of the guilty one, caught up with him, patted him on the shoulder... and recognized himself in the man who turned around. He looked down at his feet—and didn’t see his own shadow.

And that’s why it’s shameful, impossible, and absurd to drag this story out when the whole deck is in our hands and all that’s left is to find out who has which cards. And the only chance to stop standing in that ghostly light is not to try to make a deal with just one person, but to speak up about your own role. And let the rest play out theirs.

'One morning we wake up, and there’s a couple in the room.
