While escaping from an asylum for the mentally ill, four teenagers kidnap a young nurse. In pursuit of them, a detachment of policemen starts up, led by the Texas ranger Hal Hartman, vengeful and merciless. Remembering the main Hollywood maniacs, the glorious four of the old, and already familiar villains immediately come to mind: Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, Leatherface and Jason Voorhees. Each of them has a huge number of sequels and, of course, remakes, successful and not so good. For 43 years, the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" franchise managed to acquire two trilogies (the fourth part, for obvious reasons, we do not take into account) and today on the screens you can see the second restart of the legendary series.

Leatherface is primarily interesting not as a separate character, but as part of a large insane Sawyer family. In each film, she is given a lot of screen time, we always learn something new about her, which is why it does not seem that the series is marking time. Here, all this is very small, 5 minutes at the beginning of the film and 10 minutes at the end, while the rest of the time is an indistinct psychiatric hospital and a mini road movie. The fact that we are watching "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" can only be understood from the last ten minutes of the film, where there is a chainsaw and a classic chase scene. The main emphasis here is on the formation of a maniac, his youth in a madhouse, escape and the creation of the first mask. And at the same time, this is the main disadvantage of the film, there is no clear villain and victim (except for just one !!! girls), because of this, the viewer is afraid of no one, no one to empathize with, one cannot even assume who will be the first victim and who can survive. The main rules of the genre do not work.

In general, the plot of the picture is its main problem. You can easily close your eyes to a small budget and direct to DVD format, poor acting, all this is inherent in every second horror film, but it is impossible to look at giant plot holes, the illogicality of the entire narrative, incomprehensible actions of the characters and the like. This is not the first and not the second film in the series, so the explanation in the spirit of "they are crazy and that's why everything happens like this" will not work. But at the same time, you cannot completely criticize the script. In the second half of the film, there is one very memorable plot twist that, I think, no one could have predicted. And it was damn cool and unexpected, it shook up the whole straightforward narration.

It is a pity, of course, that the film was not a slasher, but an ordinary horror movie. There are good murders, cruelty and even vile moments in it, there is, of course, the groundwork for the continuation, but there is no spirit of the past parts, there is no that madness. I am sure that this reboot will no longer have a sequel, the creator of the entire series and the executive producer of this tape, Tobe Hooper, passed away the day after the premiere of the film. And hardly anyone wants to invest in the continuation of the disastrous film, except for his "father".
