“The Key” was a pleasant surprise. I was expecting the usual old-fashioned eroticism, but what I got was a very calm, almost intimate story about marriage, aging, and desire. An elderly professor realizes that his wife has long since lost interest in him, and instead of having a direct conversation, he starts a strange game: he keeps a candid diary of his fantasies and deliberately leaves the key so she can find it herself. From this point on, the film becomes a slow unwinding of a springthe wife reads the entries, awakens, begins an affair with a young man, and at the same time reaches back toward her husband, now as if he were a new person.

The film is very “quiet”: a minimum of events, a maximum of glances, mirrors, and nuances. Sandrelli draws you in every time she appears on screen; Brass films her candidly, but without vulgaritymore like a fetish and an object of admiration. The music, Venice, and the apartment’s interior create a cozy, almost dreamlike atmosphere, which is why I caught myself thinking a couple of times that the pace could have been sped up a bit.

This is definitely not a film for everyone: to some, it will seem like boring “erotica without a plot”; to others, on the contrary, it’s a mature story about desire and jealousy without moralizing. Personally, I was drawn to the combination of gentle melancholy and honest nudityno screaming, no shock, just the slow unraveling of a long-established marriage. If you like the measured European dramas of the ’80s and aren’t bothered by a lot of nudity, “The Key” is definitely worth a try.
