Review 4K Movie

The Legend of Zorro is the sequel to the story of the legendary vigilante Zorro. Having gotten a strong start in the face of The Mask, released in 1998, 7 years later the creators decided to continue the story of Zorro. The result - although not as well received by the audience and critics, but I quite liked it!

Alejandro de la Vega, born Murietta, became a rich and respected nobleman, married the beautiful Helena and raises a son Joaquin, named after his brother. At the same time, he does not abandon his vocation - the mantle of secret avenger Zorro, which negatively affects the life and relationships of his family. As California prepares to become part of the United States, a conspiracy is maturing against the country that could undermine its power and influence, even destroy America. All indications are that the charismatic and outwardly charming Count Armand is at the center of this conspiracy. Only Zorro can thwart the conspirators' plans and stop them!

What I liked about the sequel is that despite the fictionalization of the characters, the plot fits quite well into the context of real historical events. It even makes you briefly believe that this may have happened in reality. I've always liked such plots - they allow me to marvel at incredible adventures and fantasize a bit.

If the first movie in the series about a noble hero is always devoted to his backstory and formation, then in the second he always tries to stop the villains and their devious plans by any means. Here, the problem is nothing more or less - to prevent the collapse and fall of America, which is very skillfully set up by a certain secret order. It sounds quite intriguing. This also adds a plot element concerning the hero's family. After all, his double life often puts his family and friends at risk, and even if not everyone knows about his secret life. In this respect, the sequel looks even more dramatic than the first part. Such problems of self-identity of the hero always raise the bar of quality of the movie.

Well, and in terms of action - Legend is delightful! So many colorful fencing duels - there are more of them, and they are more spectacular. The budget allows you to swing for gorgeous scenes with explosions, chases, etc. There are also elements of spy action movie here, thanks to which the movie has moments with surveillance, information retrieval and conspiracy uncovering. All this makes the movie look brighter and bigger.

Antonio Banderas returns to his iconic role of Zorro (whom he later sparodied in a famous cartoon). However, he appears before us completely different from himself in the previous part. The bandit from the big road is replaced by a respectable, refined and gallant nobleman, and at the same time a loving family man Alejandro de la Vega. Like his predecessor, Alejandro in the guise of Zorro continues to protect ordinary citizens from oppression and injustice, and in this case - trying to prevent a conspiracy preventing California from becoming a state, and to stop those who seek to destroy America. At the same time, Alejandro is plagued by doubts about his responsibility to the people of California, and bitterness over family problems with his beloved wife and son. Alejandro will have to make many hard decisions in the name of honor and justice, and when he wears the mask of Zorro, takes in his hands a sword and a whip and rides into battle on the faithful Tornado, then be sure - Zorro will come out victorious from any fight.

Catherine Zeta-Jones returns to the role of Helena de la Vega, devoted wife and loving mother. Here still the role is greatly expanded. In order to avoid blackmail and Alejandro's discovery, Helena is forced to become a spy and investigate the plot and Count Armand's involvement in it. And she was simply superb - especially in the fight scenes where she fights against the three and looks flawless while doing so!

Rufus Sewell as the villain Count Armand, added to his collection of colorful and antagonistic characters, which he played quite a few in the early 2000s (it was even unusual for me to see him in the role of positive heroes). Count Armand - charming, eloquent, outwardly does not cause suspicion that behind this face hides a man unscrupulous and cruel, who will not stop at anything just to achieve the fulfillment of a long-standing purpose, no matter how crushing it was.

I would also like to mention the work of the young actor Adrian Alonso, who played Joaquin de la Vega, the son of Alejandro and Helena. A very quick-witted and bright boy, who strongly experiences the family quarrels of his parents and the constant absence of his father, considers Zorro his hero and tries to help him to the best of his ability.

The Legend of Zorro is a very worthy sequel to the story of the famous cape and sword hero Zorro. It is unknown if there will ever be a sequel or remake of the story, time will tell. But Martin Campbell's dilogy will be gladly reviewed, if there is a feeling of nostalgia. And just a desire to see the famous shot of Zorro riding a raven horse with a naked sword against the background of the setting sun....
