Morgan Edams, the brave daughter of a pirate, seeks revenge for her father, who was killed by his brother. She has inherited a third of the map of Cutthroat Island, which shows where the untold treasure is hidden. To get to it, Morgan recruits a team of her father's old battle buddies.

We have before us a very significant movie. But in a negative way. It ruined the Carolco company, and for ten years it closed the topic of piracy in cinema. Although I can't understand why it was such a smashing failure. At the time, it was a real blockbuster. There were adventures, dynamics, and treasure hunts. In short, everything you need.

Of course, the fantastic component, as in "Pirates of the Caribbean" here was not. "Cutthroat Island" in style is close to the fiction of my childhood, to the works of Stevenson, Sabbatini, Jacolio and Delderfield. At the age of ten, piracy was a sore subject for me, and I had read enough books about pirates to compare them. So "Cutthroat Island" is not very far from "Treasure Island". The only thing that distinguishes the movie and the book is that the classic style of the nineteenth century was shamelessly bypassed. And otherwise they even have almost similar plots.

So what is the reason for the failure? In my opinion, everything is in place, everything is as it should be. Maybe it's the lack of a positive hero. Who are we supposed to root for? A swaggering, masculine pirate girl with the masculine name Morgan, played by Gina Devon, Harlin's wife at the time.

I've never really minded Gina Devon, but her character Morgan Adams pissed me off when I was younger. Some perpetually drunk, promiscuous, and almost always losing her skirt in the course of the movie. Okay, now I've accepted that there's no other heroine to show us, but all the other characters didn't inspire any sympathy.

But at the age of ten my eyes were still clouded by noble flibusters like Captain Blood, noble knights without fear and reproach, and here neither knights nor chivalry does not even smell.

Now that I look at things more realistically, I realize that the pirates were like they were in "Cutthroat Island", and if they were different, they were even worse. So, in terms of credibility - the movie can be called as credible as an adventure movie can be. So, it's okay.

Is there any point in questioning again why the movie failed? Probably not. Because I'll never understand it. Renny Harlin has always made pretty average movies. Not particularly good, but not so crappy that it's impossible to watch. And there are probably only two movies in his filmography that stand out. It's "Cliffhanger" and "Cutthroat Island." Because they have everything you need for a good entertaining movie that you can watch without too much fuss.

Enjoy the movie! And God forbid you from comparing it to Pirates of the Caribbean.
