Review 4K Movie

Johnny Depp's characters are often colorful, and this talented actor can be included in the list of personalities who can play any role - from a romantic and dreamer to a maniac and gangster. However, recently in his career has come black streak; well, how black - fees are high, the movies unimpressive, and for the actor has fixed the image of a clown and a jester. Since “Sweeney Todd” Depp has not enjoyed great success, at least in the circle of movie academics. In order to regain former popularity and regain faith in himself, the actor needed a strong and spectacular image, and reincarnate in extraordinary people, change hair and makeup Depp is not used to. This image for the actor served as a real Boston gangster named James Bulger, who was the prototype of the hero Jack Nicholson in “The Departed” by Martin Scorsese.

James “Whitey” Bulger - ruthless and brutal gangster, ready to kill anyone who gets in his way. Ice blue eyes, harsh look and menacing voice instill fear and terror, and his imperturbable appearance throws others in awe, causing a restless feeling that about to Whitey can explode and put a bullet in someone's head. And that's a fate that could befall anyone - he'd kill without ceremony and without blinking an eye. Why can't they catch him? Because Whitey's not that simple, he's cunning and clever. Who would have thought that the leader of the Winter Hill crime ring and brother of local Senator William Bulger would work as an FBI informant? Yes, that's Whitey, and that's how he remained untouchable for a long time with the help of his childhood friend, federal agent John Connolly, who offered him patronage and help with his personal affairs in exchange for his cooperation.

Scott Cooper's picture begins with the interrogation of the bouncer who worked with Whitey Bulger, which gives the Boston gangster even more importance and seriousness. From time to time, the director resorts to these very interrogations, showing Bulger from the outside - as he seemed and was to others. But could being with such a ruthless man cause anything other than fear and constant tension? Whitey could calmly stage a shootout on the street or smash someone's head on the glass right in their car. Cooper shows the murders not as something shocking and epathetic, but as if they were everyday life in the 70s, which brings the viewer even closer to the crazy world of the famous criminal and gangster. In fact, this world is an ordinary city populated by people, but when Whitey kills right on the street, it's as if the city turns into a kind of a stage for him, where he can do anything he wants.

Not surprisingly, Cooper's movie is primarily attracted by the powerful image of Johnny Depp, who grabs all the attention, leaving Joel Edgerton and Benedict Cumberbatch on the sidelines. The latter, in the role of Whitey's brother and a peaceful senator, does not stand out, but Edgerton, as a federal agent, step by step transforms his character, being a kind of Donnie Brasco in the underworld, where there are no good and bad guys. There is only a thirst for power and violence, in which even innocent people are involved - family members, children and wives, one of whom are heroines Dakota Johnson and Julianne Nicholson. The former is still inexperienced in acting, but shows herself in a convincing way. Be that as it may, Depp's character remains the whole charm of the picture, and this despite the fact that the actor embodies a soulless and bloodthirsty character, which is difficult to penetrate, much less to sympathize and empathize. Due to his stern voice and unusual manner of speaking, which creates a heated atmosphere, Whitey makes you listen to every word he says with interest; what is the dialog during dinner with FBI agents. For all that, the premise is that Bulger isn't a completely terrible person, as he's not bad to the neighbors and loves his mother, but somehow that's clearly not enough. All the good in him pales against the general background, where brutal murders in broad daylight and blood flooding the streets of Boston prevail.

Bloodshed, brutality, duplicity and cunning. The alliance between the gangster and the FBI is a double play, involving incredible intrigue and subterfuge with a sense of contingency that everything could come crashing down at once. This possible eccentricity, taking on an increasingly obvious and emphatic appearance, is gripping and doesn't let go until the very end. However, this phenomenal alliance has a certain disadvantage, because at times Bulger does not seem to be the master of his own destiny, unlike the same Depp's character John Dillinger, although his character in Cooper's movie is much firmer. Moreover, Depp here does not suffer from attachment or love attraction, which could be seen in the films of Ted Demme and Michael Mann. The Depp-Johnson duo is not as spectacular or dramatic as Depp-Cotillard or Depp-Cruise. However, this is due to the essence and nature of James Bulger himself. In Cooper's film, among other things, you can follow some changes in the characters, but the changes are more likely to be observed in Edgerton than in Depp, which is again due to the characteristic of a cold-blooded gangster. In the end, Scott Cooper has a dark, in places heavy, but at the same time exciting and tense drama, striking in its impassivity and monstrous underworld of James “Whitey” Bulger.
