Story Movie

"Sugarland Express" is based on the true story of Lou Jean Poplin, who kidnapped an inmate from a Texas prison and engaged police in a frantic statewide chase in an attempt to save her son from his impending adoption by foster parents.

Review 4K Movie

Jean Poplin, after getting out of jail 3 weeks ago, learns that Social Security has taken her child permanently and given him to foster parents. Jean has a plan that she can't make without support and help. To arrive on the spot and take the child with her own hands, Jean visits her husband, serving time in a pre-release center, from where under the threat of divorce, she recovers and gets his consent to another illegal mission.

I have to admit that after “Duel” the editing in this movie came out a little crooked. What to do, what to do, but you can't argue with it. Of course, these missteps can be forgiven, the movie is far from new. For some reason, in some old movies use not know what, but achieve a real dark color of blood. Here we do not know what moved Steven Spielberg to use the usual “gouache”, which immediately throws you into nostalgia for school or kindergarten. Such moments to date are very difficult to take as something serious. For today, in such moments, this thick smell of paint, overshadows all the feeling of the loss of characters...

But what motivated me to watch it? Three reasons... because Spielberg, because it's Spielberg's first and last film to receive a nomination and even an award from the Cannes Film Festival, and because I just happened to come across it on the counter and noticed it, thanks to the colorful poster, where it's easy to mistake young Goldie Hawn for Britney Spears. And not a bad realization of the true story of Lou Jean Poplin, which took place in 1969, Spielberg succeeded. All sorts of nice little things are pleasing to the eye, like the emerged sympathy of the people, throwing usefulness in the cabin of a kidnapped police car with a policeman, who is held in the crosshairs of a revolver and a gun at the same time.

But, still, there is little belief that this is how it happened. Perhaps this journey is not even possible, but rather embellished for the viewer. Although, if you think about it, it's actually easy to believe in the frivolity of this couple. Since one of them fell for the trick of a restless wife, who dragged her husband away 4 months before the release, then one should not be surprised by such a rash plan, which can only end successfully in melodramas. In general, there is only one difficult task - to come to terms with the fact that the movie is not about some cold-blooded killers, but about young and inexperienced thieves, who can turn this whole trip with a hostage policeman into an entertaining walk, forgetting that behind them there are herds of Texas representatives of the law, together with the principled sheriff.

The screenplay is worthy of viewing. But it's still not comfortable to sit at home and watch people who are older than you, who are younger at heart.
