The girl left the baby in a baby box at the church. Deacon Sang-hyun and his assistant, who was on duty that night, erased the surveillance tapes and took the baby in order to circumvent legal procedures and find him a family and get a considerable reward for it. The next day the young mother returns, but when she learns that adoptive parents have already been found, she nevertheless agrees to give the baby up for adoption. Two men, a girl and an infant are sent in an old minibus to another town, followed by the police, who have been watching the middlemen for a long time and dream of catching them red-handed.

Japanese director Koreeda has once again managed to win over the jury and the audience of major film festivals. His previous films: 'No One Knows', 'Son to Father', 'Umimachi Diary' and 'Shoplifters' all dealt with family and social problems and became examples of quality social cinema.

In his new film, The Intermediary, the director remains faithful to his favorite themes and manner of shooting. Despite such a severe problem as abandoned children, the film is not at all gloomy and cruel, but instead is calm and lighthearted. The author does not make excuses for the characters, but does not label them as villains either.

So, at the center of the plot are two men engaged in illegal business: the sale of children. Isn't that awful? But in the course of events we get to know these characters better, and it turns out that not everything is that simple. And already the middlemen appear not as greedy businessmen, but as mediators of good, helping the children to find new families, albeit not in the most honest way.

Moreover, as it often happens in Koreeda's films, the characters are united in a family not by blood, but by spirit. And so the middlemen with the baby and that baby's mother and another orphan boy, following the scenic Korean roads, begin to bond with each other. Talking heart-to-heart, eating meals together, helping each other - quite a warm relationship.

But, naturally, this situation cannot continue as it is for long. Here are the police, following on their heels to catch the middlemen red-handed; here are the relatives of the abandoned baby's father; here is the foster family, waiting for their new family member.

How will this story end and will the mediators really do good? The author of 'The Mediator' invites his viewer to think about this.

On the whole, it is an even picture, without any overblown emotional scenes, long enough, but also beautiful and touching, with an interesting message and strong acting. And, of course, it was a pleasure to see Kang-ho Song in the leading role. Another strong role in his piggy bank.
