Creating sequels to successful films has long been the norm in film production. Especially now. When movie revenues are no longer what they used to be, many studios try to mitigate risks by having as many successful and long-running franchises in their filmography as possible. It is therefore not surprising that when a film is successful, sequels, prequels, spin-offs, and the like are immediately put into production. M3GAN was no exception, managing to earn almost $180 million on a budget of $12 million. It became one of the highest-grossing films of 2022. This is ironic considering how badly the sequel flopped and became one of the biggest failures of 2025.

The events of this film unfold not long after the end of the previous film. Cady is trying to cope with the nightmare she has experienced. Meanwhile, Jemma has reconsidered her attitude towards artificial intelligence and is actively advocating at least slowing down the introduction of AI into our daily lives. It would seem that life is slowly getting back on track. But everything changes when the experimental military development AMELIA, which was created based on M3GAN technology, breaks down, and the only chance to save AMELIA turns out to be the restoration of M3GAN.

Let's start with the fact that the story of the original film was quite self-sufficient, and it would be very, very difficult to continue it. After all, what interest can we talk about if the story is again built around a restored and again “going crazy” doll, similar to the scenario of low-quality slasher films of the 80s? Based on this, the authors of this film found the only right way—not to parasitize on the original according to the principle (everything is the same, only bigger and louder) and completely change the concept of the narrative. In my opinion, they definitely succeeded.

Even with a nod to James Cameron's Terminator: Judgment Day, the authors of this film have noticeably refreshed the concept of the film, and because of this, watching what is happening on the screen has become at least interesting. The downside is that the authors of the film sometimes go too far with sitcom-level humor and greatly simplify the characters to the level of cardboard heroes. As a result, you no longer see real people in the main characters, and the main “mastermind” and antagonist of the film becomes obvious from the very first frames. Ironically, against this backdrop, M3GAN herself and her “colleague” AMELIA have been given decent story arcs and even dramatic touches, which make them feel much more alive than the “leather bags” (as humans are referred to a couple of times in the film). Moreover, the authors of the film raise a very important and relevant topic in our time. They willingly reflect on the inevitability of AI entering our daily lives, but also on the importance of a competent approach to their training and application, which many people today simply do not think about and contribute to the formation of a possible analogue of “Skynet” in the future.

Given the change in concept and plot, it would be foolish to expect the filmmakers not to change the genre itself. While the first film was a full-fledged slasher with elements of science fiction, in this case we have a much more straightforward sci-fi action movie with elements of a sitcom. Which looks strange, to say the least. The hand-to-hand combat scenes are quite good. Some audacity and periodic touches of thriller add interest to the film. However, in other respects, the production unfortunately looks much poorer and, in my opinion, significantly diminishes the power of the much more solid script.

As mentioned above, the characters of Allison Williams and Violet McGraw are very two-dimensional, and as a result, the actresses fall short in terms of the liveliness of their performances. Amy Donald and Jenna Davis are definitely good in the roles of M3GAN and attract attention. This includes Ivanna Sakhno, who can safely be called the main highlight of this film. She managed to create both a cold-blooded and insane cyborg and a tragic character searching for her place in life. And the actress is simply a pleasure to watch. Unfortunately, all the other actors seem very dull and boring. Even Jemaine Clement, who goes overboard with his eccentricity and turns every appearance into a farce.
