Of all the ex-military films released in the last two years ('Nobody' 2021, 'The Wrath of Man' 2021, 'Lulu and Brix' etc.) Tariha Saleh's 'Mercenary' was the most memorable. It has none of the rabid violence of 'Nobody' and 'The Wrath of Man', none of the superheroes and superpowers of 'Marvel', which make the hero jump from rooftop to rooftop or... But there is a golden mean between an action film and a good old-fashioned social piece and a poignant lyrical note, which is not usually characteristic of this kind of film.

In order of merit:

1. The film grabs you literally from the first frames. I suspect it has to do with the charm of the main character - Chris Pine is surprisingly organic in the role of a stern military man - stern and without the standard Statham kind of masculinity. He can sympathize and even shed a tear, but all this only enriches the portrait, makes it deeper.

The complicated life of a retired American serviceman devoted to his motherland is expounded with laconism and talent during the first minute and a half of the movie, it attracts to the screen.

2. Quality action. No inverted Nolan inflections, no unnecessary blood or physics violations. It does not feel like distilled water, or a children's matinee of 'Terminator 5', filmed without a single drop of blood.

3. suspense. Somewhere in the middle of the film you'll feel like you've figured out who's guilty, who's right. But don't hurry - the plot has at least two more twists and turns, but without inveterate cliches - the hero is not a schizophrenic who takes parts of his personality for other people, and not a comatose man who has suddenly discovered that the world around him is a fantasy.

4. Good old-fashioned socializing. After agreeing out of desperation to a dirty job, the hero gradually sees that there are no winners in this great and unscrupulous game, started by injustice. Even among the businessmen who send people to their certain deaths. Try to find a villain in this chain. After all, everyone is just 'doing their job.

5. Absolutely lively and poignant lyricism, motivated by situations and simple human feelings. Without the homosexual inflections of Xavier Dolan.

Overall, 'Mercenary' (2022) is one of the best films in my Cinematic Universe of the past two years. It weaves elements usually peculiar to different genres into a single canvas, and it does so remarkably harmoniously. Fans of action and spy thrills will find a tense story here, fans of 'roll in the asphalt' will find a simple and poignant man's story here, and lovers of the social - everything in the best traditions of the genre, but without the straightforwardness of Ken Loach.

But the main thing this film deserves is a stinging man's tears, which, you must admit, is something rare nowadays.
