After disarming bank robbers, Frank Drebin Jr. tore down half the building, for which he was banned from the case and assigned to a new one - the investigation of a car accident that killed one of the employees of a technology company. The experienced cop suspects that these incidents are connected when fate brings him together with the beautiful Beth - the sister of the deceased and author of popular detective novels.

A reboot of the legendary franchise that began with the TV series Police Squad! and made Leslie Nielsen not just a star, but a true comedy legend. And now Frank Drebin is played by Liam Neeson, a man who has spent decades starring in dark action films, chasing kidnappers and solving problems with a stony face. The casting itself sounded like a joke, but not necessarily a good one: is “retired Qui-Gon” now Hollywood's new chief clown?
The director is the author of “Palm Springs,” and the screenwriters are guys whose only awards are nominations for the Golden Raspberry. Overseeing and producing it all is Seth MacFarlane, a fan of Liam who clearly decided, “He can be funny, you'll see!”
The picture is a sterile B-movie with neat staging and a couple of nice visual solutions. But it is precisely this sterility that kills the magic of the old films, where simple, bright cinematography and cheap gloss enhanced the buffoonery. Here, everything looks too right, as if someone accidentally shot a comedy with equipment from Batman Begins.

And what about the film itself? The absurd humor remains — there are both direct and indirect references to the originals. But the density and variety are lacking: some jokes are underdeveloped, some are drawn out, and some simply forget to bring the scene to its final absurdity. It's nice that the authors clearly love the original and tried to emulate Nielsen's spirit.
Now about the characters. Liam surprised me: his seriousness in silly scenes works, and you quickly get used to his image. He himself admits through the character's lines: “I want to be like old Frank, but be different, be unique” — and it worked. But what's missing is the trademark comedic plasticity and facial expressions. Leslie Nielsen was a living clown of the genre, every grimace and body movement was already a joke. With Liam, everything relies on the script and dialogue. This is a different Frank and a different “Naked Gun.”
Of the actors, Pamela Anderson is worth mentioning—even though she has a minor role, she looks surprisingly natural and is really interesting to watch. All the other characters are forgettable, and their jokes are mostly flat. I would like to see more density and variety in the humor, but what saves the film is that it is full of funny details in the background and sudden gags right “in the moment.”

The verdict is that this is an amusing experiment that respects the original, but is still far from legendary.
