When I feel like watching something “good old and relaxing,” I dig into movies starring Sammo Hung and his circus buddies, including Jackie Chan. Most often, these are Hong Kong parallels to French gendarmes.

The concept of friendship always comes to the fore in these films. “Adult” love, personal growth, and other Western values take a back seat here, although they are very often plot hooks that lead to trouble, which is then resolved by that very friendship. Thus, such films appeal to our subconscious adolescence, which makes them very endearing. One important nuance is that practically all of the material is unfamiliar, which is precisely what makes it so appealing, unlike the “good old” comedies that have been around for centuries. So it is important not to overuse them, lest we fall into the catagenesis of “irony of fate.”
