1946, the Soviet-Finnish border. After fighting against the Germans, a former Finnish soldier returns to his homeland, where his family was brutally murdered during the war. Deciding to dismantle his house and rebuild it elsewhere, he loads the materials onto a truck and sets off. Soon he encounters the Soviet commander who killed his family.

The sequel to Sisu has one big plus and one noticeable minus that immediately catch the eye.

First, it's still the same Sisu: a lively trashy film about a tough Finnish grandfather who won't be left alone. If you liked the first part, the question of whether to watch the sequel is rhetorical. It's another hour and a half of the same bloody, reckless spectacle, sparse on words and rich in action. This time, they went all out, adding some wit and a couple of truly original scenes. You'll remember the crossing of the Soviet-Finnish border in a tank for a long time, trust me. There's also room for drama — just a little, but it adds depth to the character of Jorma Tommila. Towards the end, there's even some black humor thrown in.

A couple of times, Sisu 2 cleverly winks at Mad Max: there's a similar font on the posters and the subtitle (there was Fury Road, here it's Road to Revenge). And in one scene, Aatami escapes from a gang of killers on motorcycles in a truck. Get it? Get it?

Now for the sad part. This is still Sisu — a B-movie made with soul, but for three cents and a pack of stale macaroni. The absurdity of the situation is compounded by the fact that the runtime is packed with action. The sequel's budget isn't as sad as the first part's, but the CGI is laughable, and the fights and chases look like they were filmed and edited by kids from the neighborhood, because there's no money for stuntmen or fight choreographers. The charisma of Mr. Tomila and Mr. Lang carries the film, as does the cuteness of the adorable puppy, who goes through fire and water with Aata for half the film.

If you watch both Sisu films back-to-back, the progress compared to the first part is obvious. It's not as dramatic a leap as in my favorite Operation Dead Snow, but it's a confident step forward. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that in the third installment, Jalmari Helander's team will finally blow our minds.
