Story Movie

Louis and his son are searching for his daughter at a rave in the Moroccan desert. He learns that another event is planned on the border with Mauritania, and in his old Citroën—completely unsuited for desert travel—he sets off in pursuit of a group of seasoned partygoers traveling in specially equipped vehicles.

Review 4K Movie

Over the weekend, I watched this year’s Cannes Film Festival winner—Oliver Laxe’s "Sirat". I sat down several times to write something about the film, but I kept hitting a wall: images would flash before my eyes, the music would still be playing in my ears, and the overall feeling was akin to complete emptiness.

The film begins with a deceptive simplicity. Luis, a Spaniard, and his son Esteban arrive in the Moroccan desert for a massive rave. They aren’t there for the music or the high; in desperation, they’re handing out flyers with a photo of their missing daughter and sister. At first, it seems we’re watching a classic detective story, shot in the style of a road movie against the real-life backdrop of "Mad Max". But the director abruptly shifts perspective and introduces soldiers into the plot, who are trying to disperse a frenzied crowd—the radio announces the start of a war. In desperation, Luis and Esteban join a group of partygoers to head deep into the desert for the next “apocalyptic” festival. Who are these people? Cripples cast to the margins of life? Stoned junkies? Or a symbol of a crippled humanity?

From this point on, the plotline about the missing girl deliberately recedes into the background, dissolving into a panorama of scorched landscapes and equally scorched fates. The director doesn’t bother with the backstories of his fellow travelers. We don’t learn how they lost their limbs or why they fled their former lives. They simply exist—dusty, weary, yet very much alive. You begin to perceive them as real people, not as characters in a script. And when Louis, a quiet, broken father, tries to replace his son’s missing sister with tender care, the ravers form a sort of dysfunctional but genuine family around them. You quickly get drawn into this because you see not Hollywood gloss and sentimentality, but sincerity and purity of thought.

But the plot twists don’t end there. After an intimate moment, another sudden explosion occurs, after which you are completely immersed in the film—or it in you. The third part of the film turns into a pure, hallucinogenic, concentrated thriller. That very “sirāt” from the title—in Islam, it is a bridge over the abyss of hell, as thin as a hair and as sharp as a sword, leading to paradise. For the characters, their trip is that very bridge. The cruelty and fear in the film are not sensational; they are down-to-earth and mundane, which makes them infinitely more terrifying.

I can’t recommend this film as light evening viewing—it’s a heavy and exhausting picture. You have to prepare for it: get in the right frame of mind for the complex visual imagery, let the music that accompanies the characters throughout their journey wash over you, allow yourself to forget about the missing girl, and empathize with these broken lives without judging them. The film is rich in philosophy, symbols, and metaphors—it’s a movie about a journey, redemption, and, perhaps, the inevitable end of the world. I’m on the side of those who enjoyed the film, and I’m sure I’ll want to watch it again.
