Review 4K Movie
Nicolas Cage is probably lost to big cinema forever, but that doesn't stop people from loving him, does it? And probably only because of him, at least someone will watch this film, after all, it doesn't matter who made the film (and this is a very good, albeit peculiar Japanese director), no matter who is there in the other roles, because this is a trashy film in which Nicolas Cage in a leather suit with bombs on it, he goes into the desert to save someone.
And it is very difficult to say something intelligible about this film, because the film is a wild mixture of many genres, strange trashy jokes, metaphors, and the director's thoughts, which seem to be there, but this is not certain.
Take at least the outset of history: in some country (probably Japan, but this is not certain) at some time (there are smartphones in the world, but the architecture and clothing of most residents are similar to what they wore in the 19th century), but very the rich governor of this strange city in the middle of nothing betrays the hero of the Toyota celica T200, which came out in 1994 (perhaps this is a subtle reference to the story of deceiving Toyota engineers in racing competitions with a racing modification of this car). As a result, the hero, who was given 3 days to search for the missing girl for some reason, decides to keep on his bike (probably because Cage just looks funny on him), but after another more insistent offer to use the car, he changes his mind.
Further it does not become much clearer, in the desert there are ghosts that do not let anyone out of there (why? Yes, just like that, and closer to the finale it turns out that they did not even have a special desire to keep someone there). The hero will also find himself in a strange commune, which for some reason does not allow the second hand of the clock to complete a revolution, otherwise an explosion (in general, in the film, a lot is tied to the clock. The clock on the protagonist's hand, which counts down the time until the explosion of his suit, is a clock in this commune, the governor, who seems to be obsessed with the clock and even tells one of the characters that this character is now his clock and must speak Tick-Tock).
I will not spoil further, but in the film there are still many counter-logical moments that raise a dumb question: 'What is the motivation of this hero?' or 'What does this have to do with it?'
But at the same time, one cannot say that following the plot is not interesting, it seemed to me very funny, surreal, like a delusional dream, but at the same time very intriguing and enticing. Although judging by the estimates, I will be in the minority.
In addition to the plot, it is worth mentioning the actors.
Sofia Boutella was just there, she had nothing to play. Nick Cassavetes likewise. But I really liked Bill Moseley, who played the governor, so he really did a great job of making an ugly and rejecting character. The rest (mostly Japanese) actors were just normal, nothing to say at all.
But naturally I have not forgotten the main star - Nicholas Coppola a. k. a. Cage. And so he was ... disgusting, I don’t know, he played so past, in moments when he was supposed to be cool he looked ridiculous, and in moments where he was supposed to be funny, he turned out to be too squeezed, which did not produce the desired effect. And in general he played as if with laziness, which is very insulting, in general, his hero turned out to be very amusing.
So where, then, is there a positive review and a high assessment of this, as it seems, a bad film? And everything is very simple - he is perfectly filmed, the scenery, the music, the camera work are just excellent, except for the moments of the action scenes, they suffer from the fact that the opponents armed with pistols for some reason try to hit him in close combat, do not shoot him in the back, and other typical sores of many films. But the rest of the time the director manages to keep a very good atmosphere and show really interesting scenes.
And in fact, yes, this film is worth watching precisely because of Shion Sono, and not Nicolas Cage, because all the good moments of the film turned out like this because of him (although probably bad ones too, but I will believe that this is a script, in Zion just filmed from the finished text without the ability to correct it).
