Review 4K Movie

Even when I saw the trailer, I thought this was some kind of unbelievable nonsense. A wild, delusional, absurd story—as strange as it gets in every sense.

Spoilers ahead!

Well, basically, the movie turned out to be just about as crazy as I’d imagined from the trailer. But it unexpectedly turned out that that’s exactly what makes it so much fun. It’s delusional, downright idiotic at times, very funny, and fully aware of exactly what it is.

Almost immediately, I picked up on the vibe of *Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves* with Chris Pine. It strikes roughly the same balance between serious adventure and utter absurdity in a world of magic, sorcerers, and over-the-top villains. As soon as a scene starts to get too serious, the movie undermines it a couple of minutes later with another joke or some kind of nonsense.

The plot, by the way, turned out to be a surprise as well. Here, it becomes more of a running joke than something the movie tries to take seriously. And they managed to weave it in quite cleverly—and at times, even amusingly.

I was also really pleased with the direction and the amount of action. There’s a ton of it here. Things are constantly flying somewhere, exploding, falling, fighting, and tearing the set apart. The movie is in constant motion and doesn’t really give you a chance to get bored.

At the same time, it’s very colorful, vibrant, and delightfully silly. Of course, there are scenes featuring a very evil villain—who literally positions himself as such—and a righteous ruler whom the villain wants to destroy. But you simply don’t have time to get seriously caught up in this drama, because before you know it, some kind of fun, chaotic madness starts up again.

It’ll be interesting to see the director’s next projects. This is his second film (his first feature was *Bumblebee*), and it’s already quite clear from this one that comedy-sci-fi with plenty of action suits him well.

I can’t help but mention the soundtrack. It’s very enjoyable and, in places, clearly inspired by Queen and their music for *Flash Gordon*. Toward the end, there’s even a direct reference that serves as the cherry on top of all the film’s musical homages. Overall, the soundtrack has a very retro vibe, as if it came from an old sci-fi movie, yet it sounds quite modern and really good.

And the film doesn’t limit itself to just references to ’80s sci-fi. It constantly references itself through cameos, familiar character names, and fan service. And this fits perfectly here, because the film regularly pokes fun at itself, its characters, and everything that’s happening.

The result is exactly the kind of movie that seemed like some kind of absurd madness based on the trailer. It’s just that in the movie itself, this madness suddenly turned out to be quite deliberate, lively, and very entertaining. It’s a perfectly decent movie for an evening, without any pretensions to cult status or seriousness.
