Lots, oh, lots of films chasing the pinnacle of cinematic prowess - 1988's Die Hard. The forgeries varied in background and tone, and yes, the concept turned out to be so compelling and simple to the public that one variation or another is still being released today. "Baby with Character," also known as "The Doorman," is yet another tantalizing tale of one man's war. This time the man-army is the female doorman (Swiss?) Of an apartment building. The similarity is alarming, the concept is almost in the plane of plagiarism, however, no matter how hard the writers try, it is impossible to make the project unique: nevertheless, the miniature lesbian Ruby Rose, who left the Batwoman series after one season, cannot effectively deal with a gang of stupid thieves.

Ali is a former tough female soldier who survived her worst nightmare during a terrorist attack. She suffers from PTSD, and despite her excellent combat experience, the heroine is demobilized. The girl hopes to find a quieter job "in civilian life" and finds - the gatekeeper of a luxury residential complex, partially closed for reconstruction. The house is also home to the former husband of Ali's sister with children: his wife died shortly before the events of the film. Only after getting a job and barely warming up the family dynamics with her son-in-law, Ali came across a gang of a certain Victor performed by Jean Reno, who was tired of life. Armed thugs blockade the building and want to clear the area in order to remove the paintings that are hidden within the walls of the complex.

"Baby with character" could very well be a real action drama about the problems of PTSD and the adaptation of soldiers to a peaceful life. Despite the fact that Ali has sharp instincts and excellent training, it is difficult for her outside the army. Thoughts of failure, paranoia, and so on, lead her to work that does not require violence, so that the further development of the main plot can be perceived with a certain amount of irony. However, this topic is not getting the desired development. Psychologism in "Baby" is minimal; even the antagonists here are some kind of collective images. It is known that an action movie is as interesting as its main villain is curious ... Viktor, on the other hand, is Gruber "on overexposure", and even without motivation as such. As for the protagonist, Ali, it seems, comes face to face with his past, although everything that happens is too arbitrary even for a testosterone (estrogenic?) Action movie. Replace the heroine Ruby Rose with the lyrical image of Chuck Norris, who has seen better days, then "Baby" will not change either thematically or conceptually, so its current value is rather weak.

The action begins when Victor appears in the frame. As soon as the intruders start bloody adventures, "Baby" finally loses touch with reality. Ali sneaks around the premises and quietly knocks out the bandits. One should not expect anything radical from the fighting scenes: this is not "John Wick" or "Die Hard", although borrowings from the latter are obvious. Take a fight on an unfinished floor. In other words, Baby's overall stress factor is limited to a couple of episodes, while Ruby Rose is limited by her character's conventions. Thus, there is very little narrative energy in the film.

The main problem with "Babes with Character" is the lack of distinctiveness: quite strange considering that Ryuhei Kitamura directed the project. There are also no traces of style and talent: Kitamura apparently worked as a director for hire (his name is not even mentioned on the poster), and shot a sluggish, dull, typical action movie - without enthusiasm and interesting ideas.
