Review 4K Movie
It's amazing how it sometimes happens that from such a simple, at first glance, plot, which evokes thoughts of a standard crime thriller, it can turn out to be such a delicate and delightful film in which, in terms of the quality of performance, there is absolutely nothing to complain about. A complete departure from plot clichés and any classic genre methods of presenting the story - the film is unexpectedly elegant and absolutely original, and if you are waiting for an ordinary action movie, you will be surprised, and maybe even embarrassed; but this, most likely, will not prevent the film from catching you from the very first shots; what is the scene at the beginning, even before the main credits, by the way, stylized for the eighties, as well as the music and some other elements in the film. This scene already sets the necessary tone for the film, gradually infiltrating the air with tension, intrigue, forcing the viewer to hold their breath and, together with the main character, tensely listen to the talks on the radio. This is the start that suspense takes, and even though here it is of a somewhat different kind than in its classical understanding, it produces a colossal effect; and it turns out to exhale only after watching the film.
"Real heroes are real people." Our hero, even though he is a man who masterly owns driving skills, and prefers the life of a lone wolf; is also subject to emotions, like the rest of us. Although not visible at first, Ryan Gosling embodies the image of a fearless hero with an amazing toughness, who seems to be absolutely confident in himself and is not afraid of anyone or anything. Absolute composure, clear calculation. But with the development of the plot, he already seems more human, and later, we can see the whole palette of his emotions, from heartfelt tenderness to all-consuming rage on the verge of madness. And the brilliant direction of Nicholas Winding Röfn sometimes masterly combines them in the most unexpected moments, plunging the viewer into a kind of shock; here, of course, I would like to note the gorgeous scene in the elevator. But, it's a shame to admit, but at first I did not take Gosling seriously as an actor. But it was a long time ago. And here - I simply cannot imagine anyone else in this role; even when his face seemingly does not express anything - you understand everything.
Acquaintance with a neighbor Irene (Carey Mulligan) and her son gives rise to a chain of events that will affect not only his fate, but also affect his inner world, possibly forcing him to reconsider his priorities. He spends time with them until her husband (Oscar Isaac) is released from prison. However, do not expect the classic love triangle in this situation; the plot presents us with everything much more interesting, while our hero, because of warm feelings towards Irene and his son, decides on a very bold act.
The film is flawless in execution. Upon closer examination, he raises many topics, but does not speculate with them at all, but makes him sincerely empathize with the heroes. He also does not try, due to sophisticated special effects and various high-tech techniques, which is called 'show off'. The same goes for music; Usually in films, the 'correct' symphonic soundtrack is used to enhance the effect and in order to evoke the necessary emotions in the viewer - here, on the contrary, in the most tense moments there is no music, during the chase we hear only the roar of the engine, and, surprisingly, the effect is obtained much more powerful. The scene with the robbery, when Blanche carries the bag to the car in complete silence, and other similar moments - all these are elements of suspense that runs like a thread throughout the film and keeps the viewer in suspense until the very end. And in moments of calm, the music is calm and soulful, creating a unique atmosphere.
The ending of this story is amazing. And the point is not at all that it was unexpected. The fact is that at the last minute the director turns the viewer's soul into a string stretched to the limit. You will understand when you look.
'Drive' is crystal clear and clear style; it is a soulful atmosphere; it is a suspense, confidently gaining momentum until the last minute of the film. A rare movie. By far one of the best films of this year.
